New to the board . . . . .

I'm new to the board and just recently purchased a 2001 Super Crew. I'm very happy with my purchase so far. I have a question though, the truck only has 30,000 miles, the front tires are cupping at a rapid rate. I believe it still has the original tires 265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. I'm just getting into driving my truck and coming from the import scene is a huge change. (Honda/Acuras) Any help would be appreciated. I'm gonna go take a look into have the tires rebalanced and an alignment done. From all the boards i've been looking at, this board seems to be very knowledgabe. Thanks for any help in adavance.

First and foremost, welcome to the #1 site on the web for F-Series Trucks! We're glad to have you aboard and congrats on your 2001 Supercrew.

About your cupping, balancing and alignment certainly won't hurt anything but, I'd say that the damage has been caused by underinflation over the period of those first 30k miles and, unfortunately, warranties won't cover this type of wear.

Again, welcome aboard. We're glad to have you.

KcMoboss,

My 97 with Goodyears, and my current 02 with Goodyears, same problem, cupping. I just checked pressure, rotated tires, checked alignment, and had them re-balanced. Tire guy found the balance to be off and each tire was slightly low on air. Only had the problem with Goodyears on the 97, ran Michelins, then Dunlops and never had a problem again. I only have 16,000 on the 02, still the first set of tires. It will be my last set of Goodyears on this truck.

Welcome to the Board, best place for F-150 advice, and just about any other advice also.

By the way, I used the search function at the top of the page and looked for "goodyear cupping" this is what I found.

welcome and hope u enjoy ur truck.. i agree it sounds like the pressure has been low for periods of time to cause the cupping. new balance and alignment and rotation with checking ur pressure periodically should cure ur problem.

I swear to you know who, these tires are no good. No good at all. My wife got these d*mn tire on her new Sport Trac. Cupped like crazy on the inside edge. By the time they hit about 20K, they were getting balanced and rotated monthly. Still made a ton of noise and thumped while braking.
Most people thought the alignment was off, pressure, etc.
Finally, I pulled them off with alot of tread left and put Michelin Cross Terrains on. All my troubles were over, and it wasn't an alignment thing. I just rotated them after 15K miles. No signs of any cupping or bad wear. Great tires.
Dump those tires and save some grief.

Since your truck is a 4x4, it will wear the front tires a little strange. You must rotate them on a consistent basis. I rotate mine every 5000 miles, I just change the oil, and rotate the tires at the same time.

Good Year has to make the best dang tire in the world for CARS.....cause if their car tires were as bad as their TRUCK tires, they would have long been out of business.

Bottom line.......GY tires suck. Buy some other brand (any will do) and your tire probs will dissappear. I run nothing but BFG and have no probs whatsoever.

S'crew Tires!

I put 43000 miles on the Generals on my '02 S'crew, could have possibly gone another 5000. Mine is 2wd & I rotated them @ 10000 mile intervals. They wore evenly and balanced well. I bought new Dominator Sport A/T (Cooper Tires) on & have 5000 miles on them & still the same, seem to be good tires also. Good luck w/new S'crew
