2004 F-150 First Impressions

I've read everything that people on the boards have had to say about the F-150, and I finally got to see them in person at the Texas State Fair. I think that the F-150's were almost the only vehicles Ford brought to the Auto Show at the Fair. There was just about every model and configuration (reg cab, ext cab, Screw, Stx, XLT, Lariat, FX4, etc...) you could imagine.

From the outside, I think they look really nice. I wasn't too big on the door handles or the mirrors, but it was a really slick looking truck from the outside.

The inside was little different for me. The floor shifter was not something I would want. I thought it took up too much space. One of the reasons I went with the 60/40 was to not have a center console. I thought the rail system was a great idea. The DVD player set up was very nice and the whole idea of a rail based system offered a lot of possible upgrades down the road. It's a very efficient use of the space.

The real dealbreaker for me would have been the rear seats on the SuperCrew. Before I got my Screw, I had a Checy ext cab. The rear seat lifted up, and took away a lot of space. It made me carry my dogs in the back under the cap. When I saw how the rear of the '03 Screw came down instead of up, I was in love! I was very disappointed to see that the new F-150 Screws have gone to the seats raising up instead of folding down. Other than that, it looks pretty nice.

The one vehicle that I think might give Ford a run for the money would be the new Nissan Titan. They had several there as well. If I hadn't bought in January this year, I would be deciding between the '03 Screw and the '04 Titan. The rear seat in their crew cab folded down, of course! First, I thought having the rear window roll down (like the old Broncos) was really impressive. Also, the lower utility (behind the back rear driver side tire) box built into the bed was a nice touch. I hope Ford includes some of these items in later production models. On the down side, they were using that darned floor shifter as well.

Anyway, there's my $0.02 for the day.
