Mag-Hytec Differential cover installed
Mag-Hytec Differential cover installed
Last week my wife noticed what appeared to be a leek on the bottom right corner of the rear differential cover.
Got to hate it when that happens. I told her that I could take it to Ford for warranty service, but I would prefer to just replace it with an aftermarket cover, allowing for it to run cooler. It was also time to change the fluid. We go camping a lot, so towing a TT puts a pretty good load on the truck, I told her that it would help run cooler. She agreed and I bought the Mag-Hytec cover. It's expensive, but has a large capacity. It's a very high quality piece of hardware, I would recommend it. I was also nice not to have to silicon to seal it with either.
I was surprised when I pulled the old cover off and the fluid was nasty. Water must have gotten in there sometime, and I've never been through deep water at all. Anyway, the smell was terrible, I was very glad that we found this when we did. I scraped the silicon off and bolted the new cover on. I filled it with 5qts of Amsoil 75w-140 fluid and the slip-lock limited slip additive. I changed the front differential to, it wasn't bad. There I used Amsoil 75w-90, about 2 qts.
There's a few pics in my gallery.

The cover looks great, I noticed mine was rusting almost from DAy One.....i finally last week, wire brushed it down and primed and painted it. Every Ford Truck I look under has the same rusted cover. I think Ford should use a better quality material. again....yours looks great....maybe that will be my next move.
Thanks, I think it a mod worth the money. There are others I considered, but I liked the looks of it a lot.
Norm, how many bottles of slip lock did you use? They recommend 4oz per 3 quarts, but Amsoil also says you don't have to use it at all with their 2000 series oil. I poured 1 bottle it, but am thinking about adding a second one.
Thanks,
Rick

I found the cover for about $250 from performance products. You can buy it directly from them for $230, but their web site doesn't have security so I passed that up. Probably could call though. The cooling coms from the extra fluid capacity, the pan is aluminum, and it has raised fins also. They claim up to 45 degree cooler temps, and I would have to say it's probable pretty close.

I only used one bottle. I felt the same as you, Amsoil said it wasn't needed but Ford said it is needed. I figured one bottle should be fine. I got mine direct from Mag-Hytec for 240 plus 10 shipping. Very fast service. Only complaint was that I got no confirmation that they received my order. I called and she said she had already boxed it and shipped it! Damn, fast service. They ship all in stock orders the same day they are received, provided of course you place your order before the truck shows up.
