K&N fipk
I went around the horn on testing just about every style FIPK that is made, and could be made.
- JLP Air Ram air box with dual 3" feeds using a WMS V-Tube for the intake elbow
- K&N FIPK
- Ice-Man FIPK
- K&N Inake elbow with a MAFS adapter plate using the filter from the JLP Air Box.
Lowest 60' times on the G-Tech, and the most lbs/min at the MAFS is the K&N Intake elbow with the MAFS adapter plate and the 14" long filter out of the JLP air Box, in other words a AF1 intake. Lots of time and money wasted doing tests, to find out what Mike Troyer has been saying all along.
Save yourself the time and just get the AF1.

Thanks for the input. I talked to a guy at work today that had put in something similar to the K&N But he couldnt remember the brand. he said it really improved his gas mileage though. I like the looks of the air force one. and would like to modify the truck somehow, and i have to start somewhere. Just wondering if it was a complete waste.

Mike,
It is not a dead topic, just a well talked about one
Never can tell, the results can change if a new design ever comes up, so it is always good to ask, for review and for newer members.
For the testing, I was using a G-Tech, not the pro one with the built in Dyno, so I don't have HP and TQ numbers per, I just compared 60' times. I am still trying to get one of the higher end G-Techs. Need to save the coin for the delta from the sale of my previous one ( house is sucking money with projects at the moment ).
The testing that I did was with the Micro Tuner, and the Gibson cat-back ( prior to the Bassani True dual install ), so I don;t have an idea what the FIPK alone would yeild, I would toss a SWAG that maybe 1 HP..maybe 2 HP, and not specifically at peak. Got me, a FIPK is one of the lowest $$/HP mods that can be done, but it helps when done as you noted in a kit of parts, with the other parts ( getting the xhst out of the engine does little good, unless you can get it in, same for the parts of the Chip ).
In terms of $$/HP the order seems to be held at Chip, Electric Fans, Pulley set, cat-back, then FIPK ( for the more pedestrian mods ). But as you noted, a Cat back and FIPK help the Chip reach full potential yeild, so it is kind of a nessesary evil.
My testing was based on 60' times ( that was not a night and day increase between each ) and the AutoTap logs of the flow rate at the MAFS in lbs/min. Taking the MAFS flow rate, more lbs/min means more fuel, which in turn means more HP. That is how I stuck with the last one that looks like the AF1. Given the flow rate on the JLP air ram air box, and the same filter with the MAFS adapter plate on the K&N intake elbow are the same in the 50 mph and over area, the under 50 mph area, the air ram arix box had the sucking on a straw affect going on. Something I did not look at close enough in the first round of testing I did.
So I guess you can put a FIPK on, but with the intention of getting a cat-back next, then the Chip to top it off, as a min entry for mods. If you are not planning on the cat-back and chip, then the money saved on filter change outs will be a long time to recover from purchasing the FIPK with the reusable filter.
As for increased MPG, get a vac gauge, and keep the needle in the 12 to 18 in/Hg range, and your MPG will increase, at a cost of a 30.00 vac gauge. That is key, is keeping your foot out of it, under all areas ( take off, passing, etc ) but I will agree, it is not any fun to do this
Good luck with the selection, call Mike Troyer and ask him, he will let you know what you can expect for each step, and then you can decide if it is worth it. I know I was only doing the Gibson ST, and the K&N FIPK and stopping. Yea riight !! 2 years later, I have turned the truck upside down with mods, and testing.

We were truck talking and i showed him a picture of the K&N fipk and he said he had one, but it wasnt K&N. He said on a recent trip, he got five hundred and something to a tank. And before he only got something like 370. But he said he notices a difference and is happy with it. At some point i would like to modify the exhaust, not too loud, but i dont know about the chip.

By the way. When you get ready for a catback, open a thread asking for opinions / recommendations. You'll be amazed at the number of responses you'll get.

I guess my main reason for the af1 isnt fuel mileage, but it sure would be a good side effect. If i could get a little more hp, and it helped out while towing, that would probably be the main thing. I'm extremely happy with the truck. Wouldnt trade it for anything. Pulls my 25' trailer very well, loaded up with us and two kids and a dog. I would like to "improve" it over a stock truck though. And you're right on about the gas mileage if it was a major concern i'd be driving a focus.
