Screw towing mileage

First real towing experience with the Screw. Took the boat (~4400lbs) over Berthoud pass to Shadow Mountain Reservoir. Total trip there and back was around 250 miles. I averaged 11.5 mpg. Truck did pretty good, at times I was in second gear doing 50 mph, but that's to be expected at 9000 ft. Thankfully I didn't have to use the A/C, that really seems to bog it down when towing.

Not bad. I only managed 11.5mpg on my recent trips as well only towing about 2500# including the cargo trailer. I managed to keep the speed between 70 and 85 the whole time, though.

Talking Pulling mileage

You guys are lucky. My wife won't let me use her S'crew to pull the boat. We have to use my 93 w/ the 5.0. Does the job, just not as well or fancy as the S'crew!

That's pretty bad mileage...aren't you close to sea level?

I guess I should be happy - I usually get 14-15mpg normal lead foot driving, and then the 11.5 I got towing. There were times going up the hill I wanted more power, but I was passing most everyone else towing something except the diesels.

Towing a 25 foot travel trailer i get around ten mpg. I have to take it out of OD though. But runnin down the road with no load, air running, i got 19.6 mpg. 5.4L, supercrew, 4x2, which i was pretty happy with. I had a 91 ranger 4.0 4x2 that i mostly only got 19mpg. Just wondering, can i expect better gas mileage if i put in a K&N air filter? Is there anything else out there that will improve hp & mileage without using a supercharger? Just got the truck in May and have only 3500 miles on it, Kinda new to the supercrew.

Quite a range I am seeing here! I have the 4x4 5.4L SuperCrew, and get right around 15mpg no matter what I do. A little less when pulling the enclosed trailer with motorcycles in it, but around 13.5mpg was the worst I saw so far. My enclosed plus the bikes in it is sitting right around 2000lbs.

Oh yeah, and jswford, don't expect a major gain with the K&N, I just added it and maybe saw a 1mpg difference, same as when I changed the fuel filter. Not a noticeable power change either.

I haven't pulled a full tank yet so I'm not sure but I would guess 8-10mpg. My friend borrowed his dad's 03 on 2 seperate trips. This first trip it was all stock, 6 mpg. The next time he had a K&N air filter and had cut out, gutted and reinstalled the catalytic convertors and got 10mpg. I'll wait until the warranty is up to gut my cat's. Oh yea, neither of us pull in OD.

Latest adventure this past weekend, (Labor Day). Pulling my travel trailer, about 4800lbs loaded, going up and down some pretty hilly terrain, I got 8.8 mpg. I have the 5.4 with 4x4 and 3.73 gears. When I tow, I do not use OD, too much shifting for my liking. I guess I wan't too concerned with that mileage. I usually get around 13.5 mpg going back and forth to work, (45 mph city driving). On the higway, just the truck, about 17 is the best I can ever muster. Like I have stated before tho, if I was worried about gas mileage, I would have bought a Focus. Long live the almighty V-8 and V-10. Nothing like cruising in my screw.

I've gotten about 10.5 on average towing a 23' TT, about 6,000lbs. Hwy is about 14.
