Question Help with Polarity

Supercrewers,

I also posted this in the speaker forum but I think that I trust you all a little more.

I installed 4 POLK 6x8s in my truck last weekend and wanted to know if it matters what way you connect the wires? I did not use a harness because no one around me carried them or had them in stock. The speaker wires in all four doors were all different colors. Is there a way to determine the polarity or does it matter without an amp pushing high wattage? Why in the world doesn't Ford get a clue and color their wires black and red? or at least a black and red stripe or something. the wires were anything from green with an orange stripe to pink with a blue stripe. (or something like that)

Thanks,

Willderness

If the polarity is backwards on one side and correct on the other side you will get sound cancelation. Basically the speaker will pull first then push instead of the other way around. If they are all backwards then you should never notice a diffrence. I am not sure if it will damage the speakers at high volumes or not, I don't think it will though. Many high end subs can have the "phase" inverted and that simply means the voltage is backwards and this is because if the sub if far from another bass source it won't cancel it out.

I don't really know what color wire is what but I would use a voltatge meter and then if you get a positive reading that should be the + and -.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

You can also use a AA battery across the speaker terminals to determine polarity. Use a short piece of speaker wire, hooked to the speakers terminals on one end and the + and - on the battery on the other end. When the + on the battery is on the + speaker terminal, the cone on the speaker will move outward.

B-Man,

Thanks a lot! I also printed out the schematic on your page. It will help alot. Damn those Circuit City Employees. They sold me the wrong harnesses and I didn't figure it out until I had a door off. By that time I was too lazy to drive back.

On the schematic how can you tell - from +? Is there any way that you can email me the clearer picture?

Thanks

Cool

willderness -

The schematic I have does not show the polarity. I simply labeled the wires - and + to aid in pairing them up properly.

I made the assumption that the polarity of the wires coming out of the HU would be consistent : 1st wire -, 2nd wire + and so forth.

I will see if I can dig anything else up...

Great!

I will see if it sounds differently tonight. I hope to have time to switch the wires.

Alright,

I opened up the doors last night and just my luck...both left doors were hooked up backwards and both right were correct! I was cancelling out all 4 speakers. What was the odds that randomly I would hook then up EXACTLY the worst way? Now all of them are correct finally and it does sound better.

Everyone thanks for all of the help (Especially the schematics B-Man). It is so nice to have a community like this to get thte help you need.
