Question tranny thunk

i know this has been beat to death. i've been reading all the discussions, but i haven't seen the actual TSB on this issue. i've seen talk about a recall? for the ranger for this reason. can someone give me the TSB or who at Ford they talked to to get this fixed. my service guy says that it is normal for a 4x4! i would love to go in with the TSB in hand and make him fix it!!!

Service Bulletin # 010804 "Clunk on Light Acceleration"

TSB #01-13-7 Issued in July 01. Description states A/T - 4R70W Clunk Noise on 2nd to 1st Gear Downshift.

I believe that the resolution is to add 'friction modifier' which apparently works for about a month. Then right back to the original 'THUNK'.

I still thunk.

ok, here's something I've had in my two previous trucks, 97 & 99, it's a TSB ( #971111A, don't hold me tonumber it was on receipt) on the 1-2 shift accumulator piston in transmission, it's done through the tranny pan so it does not involve removing transmission, worked like a charm both times.
Good Luck

Not sure where else to point you but you might try Gino's #...

I am using a 2001 TSB listing from www.alldata.com

Specifically,

www.alldata.com/TSB/20/012077DA.html

G'luck.

I have a thunk in the drive line as well. Mine seems most obvious when I accelerate normally from a stop. It is almost like there is excess slack in the drivetrain. Odd thing is that it doesn't do it everytime. Perhaps need the backlash in my ring and pinion adjusted?

I will chime in here since my truck seems to be having some odd "thunks" at times also. I notice it much more on cooler days(below 65degreesF) and I notice it when I go around a curve or make a turn. I think on a few occasions I have noticed it on a 2-1 downshift also. My warranty will go out soon, so if I need to do something about it, I better get crackin.

I have been reading our posts and they all sound like the problems I was having. Please get them checked before your warranty runs out. I was in my friends crew the other day nd his had the same thunk, his appointment is thursday. I'll update on the status.

Unhappy

I'll chime in on this as well. I've been trying to get my truck fixed now for 2 years. I have taken numerous Service Writers and Techs for rides.. Yes they feel it. Then I get the ..... "Condition is normal for vehicle" B.S. I've asked them to check the TSB's, they say there are none that apply. They say that unless a TSB is in OASIS, it doesn't apply. I'm at my witts end. I'm @ just over 35K and trying like heck to get them to do something. If anyone has any luck, PLEASE fill us in.

Thanks. Sorry for my venting.

The driveline clunk is normal but for those that continue to complain lube the slip yoke with a teflon grease if it goes away put a new driveshaft in it and it will usually solve the problem for awhile untill the splines in the driveshaft get some wear and then it comes back.
Most of the time this clunk is felt right has you come to a stop or just has you take off. I tell most of my customers its normal because the noise will come back. Its usually seems to be more of a problem on the 2 wheel drive.

So what you're saying mxracer is that it's a design flaw and there's nothing that can be done to fix it?

I've heard that the friction modifier has helped some to minimize the thunking...

what you described is IDENTICAL to how mine thunks. Almost at a stop or immediately on take off from a stop.

I don't think you could really call it a flaw. The clunk doesn't hurt anything, you can drive your truck for years with the clunk and it causes no harm. Its caused by wear or poor fit from the get go. I quess if its a flaw we would need to say every car on the road is flawed because they all have parts that wear or begin to make noise with time. BTW my 2002 has 48,000 and I have just started getting it on mine so I lubed my slip yoke last month and the problem has disappeared for now

I've heard others say that the friction modifier helped their thunk temporarily. I have no experience with this though...

Like you said, 48K on yours. I have almost 21K on my 2001 and't it's been thunking since purchase with 4K miles (demo). Just seems odd that it's thunking at 4k... something is definately not right...

Sure, every vehicle on the road has an issue... new or old. I could understand a rattle in the interior or something of that nature but not something along the lines of the drivetrain... Just not a good excuse for that in my book...especially at 4K miles.

Your correct 4k is premature for the famous clunk. I would get the slip yoke lubed and if it goes away or gets better I would try to get your dealer to warranty a driveshaft. Like I said I always try to convince our customers its normal characteristic because the noise usually returns and when it does the customer is really pissed because then we can't fix anything. Try the old my brother who lives in another city has a F 150 that had the same problem and his dealer fixed his by putting a new driveshaft in his truck. Good Luck
