Dennis,

That's a great bit of advice. Recently I heard of a similar incident somewhere here in Louisville. Person driving didn't have the vehicle locked and someone approached, opened the door, tossed that person out, and took off with their vehicle. It happens... better safe than sorry.

Yeah, RP. Sadly, things these days are so different from only a decade or two ago.

Got to watch what goes on around you. If you don't, no telling what might surprise you.

Wickman put this on another post so thought I would paste it here too for him:

I could see that maybe if you drive around in a big city, you may want your doors locked all the times, but around here...

Plus, I was talking with a guy just last week, His best friend died a year ago when he struck a phone pole, and the witnesses seem to agree the air bag probably knocked him out because, the impact was not that great, but for some reason, the car caught fire, and the bystanders could not open the doors to get him out cause the doors were all locked. By the time someone had brought someting to break a window, it was too late, the fire was too big.

d (will lock doors myself if I feel the need) postman

Luckily in Missouri we have rocks and we have trees and lots of both. So we will always have something to break a window open provided there is atleast one witness that does not panic.

I'm not ussally clastraphobic but there was something about hearing those doors click when I started to roll that made me slightley uncomfortable. Maybe I do have an unrealized fear of being trapped in a vehicle, it just dosen't sound like any fun to me. Is that not natural?

There are numerous reasons I am glad mine dont do it anymore.

I sat and read my owners manual front to back last night and did finally notice th section about disabeling the Auto locks in there.

Now I want to know the odemeter as speedometer trick, because it was not in there! As well as any other easter eggs anyone might know about.

Guys ya'll are GREAT!!!! I've been dealing with this freakin auto lock since I bought the truck about 2 months ago. All I could find before was disabling it through the keypad on the drivers door. Problem is I bought it from an individual and he didn't even know what the code was. I've learned that the factory code is on some computer thingy behind the rear seats. I was looking for that thread to firgure out how to tear apart the rear seats and plastic and came across this thread. I went out there with my laptop...so I could read and do it at the same time..wa-la....NO AUTOLOCKS!!!!!!!! I feel like buying you guys a steak dinner!! You just don't know how frustrating it is to get out when you go some where and go to get a little one out of the back....oh..dorrs locked...and have to reopen the driver's door to press the unlock switch and then get your kid out! MAN I love you guys!!!!!!!!!1---DirtySCREW

Personally, I like that feature. That said, isn't there also an option you can turn on that will auto-unlock all the doors after you park and open the driver's door? With that enabled, you'd solve your issue of having to unlock the doors to access the rear doors.

Ah, here it is from the owner's manual:

Autounlock feature
The autounlock feature will unlock all the doors when:
• the ignition is in the on position, all the doors are closed, and the
vehicle has been in motion at a speed greater than 12 mph (20 km/h);
• the vehicle has then come to a stop and the ignition is turned to the
off or accessory position; and
• the driver door is opened within 10 minutes of the ignition being
transitioned to the off or accessory position.
Note: The doors will not autounlock if the vehicle has been
electronically locked before the driver door is opened.

Deactivating/activating autounlock feature
Your vehicle comes with the autounlock features activated; there are four
methods to enable/disable this feature:
• Through your authorized dealer,
• by using a power door unlock/lock sequence,
• using a keypad procedure (if equipped), or
• or by using the instrument cluster message center (if equipped). Refer
to Message center in the Instrument ClusterDriver Controls chapter.
Note: The autounlock feature can be activated/deactivated
independently of the autolock feature.
Power door lock switch autounlock enable/disable procedure
Before starting, ensure the ignition is in the off position and all vehicle
doors are closed. You must complete Steps 1–5 within 30 seconds or the
procedure will have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be
repeated, wait a minimum of 30 seconds before beginning again.
1. Place the key in the ignition and
turn the ignition to the on position.
2. Press the power door unlock
control three times.
3. Turn the ignition from the on
position to the off position.
4. Press the power door unlock
control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to the on position. The horn will chirp one time
to confirm programming mode has been entered and is active.
6. To enable/disable the autounlock feature, press the lock control, then
press the unlock control. The horn will chirp once if autounlock was
deactivated or twice (one short and one long chirp) if autounlock was
activated.
7. Turn the ignition to the off position. The horn will chirp once to
confirm the procedure is complete.

The '03 manual give directions on how to turn the chirping seat belt reminder off... I don't remember it exactly but was something like pat your head and rub your belly, turn around 4 times, turn the lights on, turn the lights off, kick the driver's side tire then jump on the tailgate. Seriously, I tried it once and couldn't get it to work but all you have to do is push the red release button on the seat belt in when it starts chirping and it will stop. This doesn't work on '04+ models though...
