Taking the Cheese to the Mouse
Taking the Cheese to the Mouse
{since this is a family forum, I had to resist the urge to title this thread "Long Distance Screwing"}
I recently drove my '02 Screw from Southern Wisconsin to Orlando - and back- for a week's vacation with the wife and 3 kids. So I thought I'd start a discussion about traveling long distances in a Supercrew.
Here are some observations.
1) Truck performed ADMIRABLY on the highway, even at speeds in excess of 75MPH, although acceleration is slow after 65. I found it best to avoid forcing the trans to downshift into 3rd, because it was a loud experience if it did.
2) My mileage went up to 16 MPG from its normal level of about 12MPG! This despite the fact that I had at least 1,000lbs worth of people and luggage. The luggage in the bed was covered by my new ARE Z series top. I think that there are reasons why I get poor gas mileage around home: Chicago is forced to use reformulated gasoline (RFG =lower emissions) which is rumored to give lower mileage. Also, I generally turn off the overdrive since my daily commute does not involve exceeding 45MPH.
3) My truck did consume over a quart of oil on the trip. (I had the oil changed immediately before and after the trip). I am a little concerned about this. Any comments?
4) The front center console held a 9" tv-vcr for the duration of the trip. I still had a stich of space to rest my elbow. All in all, the TV made the 2 day trip tolerable to the kids. Only way to go.
5) The spaciousness of the cab made it possible to carry a lot of junk up front with us - everything from snacks, drinks, toys, books, maps, magazines, CD players, CD cases, paper towels, kleenex, VHS tapes, garbage bags, TV, sunglasses, pillows, etc How the heck could you do that in a sedan?
6) I saw a lot of Screws in Florida, more than in Chicago suburbs. But I live in minivan & SUV territory.
7) Never had a squeek or rattle out of the truck. It may take a few weeks to vacuum crackers out of rear carpet. I was glad to have 5 cupholders - used them all.
8) Thank goodness for small favors: My 7 year old barfed about 4 seconds AFTER exiting the truck on a gasoline stop. She held a bucket the rest of the way.
9) It seems that when driving long distances on expressways, there were a lot of drivers who have no problem cutting me off when I was driving my Grand Am. When I am driving a big truck, it seems that they give me a little more room.
10) Disney World Rocks! Expensive, but worth it.

99FCAS,
Nice story, I did that two years ago with my two kids and wife, similar experience, in fact, it's time to go back.
We did it in a Honda Van. You are correct, the TV/VCR was invaluable. Would love to try it in the SCrew, but my wife would rather ride in the Van. Despite what you think, that's a good thing. Never have to worry about drinks, food, barf in my truck. The van, on the other, hand has seen it all.
I think everything about the trip seems normal, except the oil consumption. I would worry about that. BUT, I ain't no expert. There are people on these boards that will know if that's normal.
Thanks for sharing,
john

Ahhh... Mouse land...
In the words of Rodney Carrington (comedian)...
"My family and I went to Disney Land for our last vacation... it was hot, I stood in line for hours, rode 3 rides, and spent $3000 bucks.... I'm not real sure but I think I got screwed on that one....
My *** was a little sore when I left the Magic Kingdom that day..."
LMAO!

You were worried about the oil use, check and see, on your recipt, how many qts they put in your screw, before you departed on your adventure, 5 or 6 I'm betting, and when you got back you mention you changed it again, see how much oil they used again, I have had to put 7 qts in my 01 screw to get it on the upper end of the running range, where I like to have it, the time before last I had my oil changed, they put in only 6 qts, when I wen't back after 5000 miles, they said I was a qt. low, because with 6qts. you are at the lower end of the dip stick, a nice way for them to make you feel bad, and make you change you oil sooner, just my .02
My SCrew takes 7 qts. on an oil change also. Before my next change you can bet I'll put a remote oil filter kit on it. Don't use any oil going to Disney, its only 1 hour away. Been there a lot of times and I still love it.
