Performance mods, long term effects
Performance mods, long term effects
For a while now I have been considering a new exhaust and a intake. Maybe a chip but not while gas prices are so high.
I know that my warrenty cannot be voided but I was wondering how these mods affect the truck over the long haul. I plan on keeping my screw for a long time, at least as long as I had my ranger. (10 Years).
Obviously making the engine "breath" better is allways good but I wonder why a better exhaust and intake are not standard if they improve the truck so much.
Im curous what ford's opinion is of doing such mods to your truck.

The HD Super Crew, straight from the Ford factory plant have standard super charger, performance exhaust, and lowered suspension just to name a few. So it's all about how much money you want to spend. In other words, the new HD is a "modded Supercrew." So the answer is YES, it is a Ford standard, you just have to pick the right model. Why isn't it a standard on our screws? Because its cheaper to mass produce our parts thus, making the package more affordable to the common consumer.
I brought my truck to my hometown ford dealer for an oil change while I was home once and since it was the first time they saw my truck, and all the exterior mods on it, when they popped the hood, they started giving me grief about the AF1 intake kit...then they noticed the dual exhaust.....and how I basically gave up my right to warranty work b/c of them....then I asked if they had heard of the magnuson-moss warranty act...he kind of smirked and shut up...
hell they even gave me crap about my headlight covers and taillight covers, saying I'll get pulled over for em...("my nephew got pulled over for his headlight covers") To which I replied, 'were his covers the solid blacked out ones? yes....that's why he got pulled over....' he pretty much shut up after that.
Even if you're not there to try and get warranty work on a slightly modded truck, They all seem to give you crap. I haven't befriended a mod-friendly dealership yet.
I've had my gear on the truck for about 1 1/2 to 2 years and everything is still going strong. a little over 37k miles. I'm out of warranty, so it doesn't matter to me....

the magnuson-moss act said that dealerships cannot deny warranty work because of mods if they are small mods that could not have caused the problem. and an intake, exhaust, and chip will not give you any problems. things like exhaust would not let ford bring the truck everywhere due to emissions. same with other things as they may negativley effect gas mileage, emissions, etc. etc.
plus i love my chip/exhaust/intake.

I believe magnuson-moss actually states the dealership / manufacturer must prove the modification caused the problem, irregardless of the modification, before they can deny a claim.
I remember reading, in some of the nastier cases that this actually goes back to the engine design specifications, not the marketing limits of our vehicles. An example of this would be where red-line really is on engine RPM.
Your dealer is really showing their ignorance and in most cases they are being hypocritical since most do there own add-ons or packages from conversion shops. This would include things like paint sealants, undercoating, blinking third brake lights, etc.

long term effects......
I have had a Superchip, Air Force 1, and Flowmaster (40's) two into one on my 2001 SCrew for 54,000 miles. Sure, I have to burn
92 octane, but I really don't mind. ( 5.4 with 3.55 L/S)
The only long term effect I can see, is that I forget how *****ty it ran before the mods.
I drive 80 miles round trip each day, usually 7 days a week, and normally average 17-19 mpg. On long road trips I average around 20-21, at 65+mph.
Do yourseld a favor and call Mike T. at 540-862-9515 and let him get you started. You will be GLAD you did.

By Best is
19.2 MPG followed by 18.2 MPG with a '03 FX4. How do you get it? It was flat, I used cruise control at 60 MPH. The 18.2 MPG trip was the same as the 19.2 MPG trip except I got stuck in stop and go traffic twice which is a mileage killer.
Other than that GET OFF THE GAS pedal.
Accelerate slowly, especially up to 20 MPH, don't give it gas it is not needed,
slow down ahead of time to maintain some speed when you can
see that if you don't slow down you will have to stop and then accelerate your 2 1/2 ton truck again.
Use a good quality of gas like Chevron.

I found a great mod friendly dealership. Was in for my first oil change and talked to the assistant service manager. He was a Ford Mechanic for 41 years before taking the desk job. He loved the mods I've done and gave me some pointers on what I could do in the future. He gave me his business card...I will definitely be in touch!

if I could get that! best I've seen is 17.25mpg on a 250mile trip.
