Trailer hitch?
Trailer hitch?
I got my SuperCrew last summer. At the time the dealer had everything I wanted sitting on his lot. He was willing to deal and the incentives were available so I bought. Never regretted the decision, it's been just what we wanted. But....
Even though I had no intentions of towing anything I would have liked the class III towing package but it wasn't on the truck I finally bought. So, now I'm thinking of towing a small camper trailer this summer and I've got to get a hitch.
I know nothing about this. You guys are the start of my education. Is there any difference in hitches, assuming class III rating? Should I go for a good deal or are there things I should know about and look for?
Thanks for any information and help.

Nope...
Class 3 is class 3... It's based on weight carrying ability of the hitch and they class them, typically 1-5. A class 3 will do everything you need it do and won't exceed the capabilities of the truck..
Make sure you get at least a class three ball and mount also...

edit: oh yeah, you will know a POS hitch when you see one, go with a reese, draw-tite, valley or some other reputable company...

The big part of the Class III pkg from the factory is the heavy duty battery, auxillary tranny cooler, and hitch with wiring bracket. You can add the hitch and wiring, but the aux cooler and HD battery would be pretty expensive.
I went to Farm & Fleet and picked up a hitch for $75 on sale. Reg $99. You can install it in 15 minutes. Six bolts is all it takes. the nice thing is Ford has the holes already to go, and the hitches are made to fit the holes in your truck.
I brought my home, and took it out of the box. Threw the bolts under the truck and crawled under with the hitch. As I lay there my son walked up and said that I needed to take him to school. I asked how much time do I have, he said fifteen minutes. Well, fifteen minutes later we were on our way with the new hitch securely in place.
The wires should already be there, unless you need a 7 pin hook up. I think if you have it installed it will be $130 plust $29 for the install.

I bought my SuperCrew without the tow package. I did add the hitch and wiring to tow my toy hauler. Instead of getting a bigger tranny cooler I decided to get a Turbo Diesel that comes with the tow package. I know, my way was a lot more expensive.

thanks for the info
I'll be looking for a name brand and a good deal. Sounds like the install shouldn't be a problem.
I know I won't have the other options that the tow package gives you but right now I don't plan on hauling anything very big or very often.
