cracked paint job
i just bought an 2001 F150 supercrew in great shape, but i noticed that the paint job is cracked all over the truck. i took it to the dealer and they said they could not do anything about it. is there any one else out there with the same problem? if so what is next?
I have not heard of this, but I would think that if you bought it used from the dealer then they should warrenty it. If you got it from a 3rd party then the best thing you can do is ask them about it.
Can you take a picture of the cracking paint as I really don't have a good idea of what you mean exactly.

"Cracking" paint problems (referred to in the auto body biz as "etching") is caused by the paint curing too quickly. This "fast cure" is generally due to there having been too much catalyst mixed with the paint during application. This is done to speed-up the cure process in order to apply the second stage (clearcoat) in order to "get it out the door" to the customer. It typically shows up on vehicles that have had a panel redone or a vehicle repaint by large, low-cost, chain production shops. Since this (mixing/application/cure) is handled through automated CNC processes at the factory, it rarely occurs with new vehicles.
Might try posting this in the 'GENERAL CARE' forum. There are a couple of professional detailers that frequent that forum and might know of some 'filler' products that can help you out and get your truck back to show-room new.
I can't begin to explain how much I've learned in that forum alone...

I remember a while back a lot of SC owners complaining about the paint quality. Many of them posted they had their dealer repaint their trucks under warranty. I too have a paint issue with my 2001 SC ... some crackly looking spots on the hood. I get my SC detailed twice a year and the owner there confirms the problem and it is due to the curing process used by Ford. We looked at the spots using a magnifying glass and you can clearly see the paint cracked. I plan to take mine in before the 36K warranty is up.
