Need help with possible gear change out !!!

Need some help from you guys
I have a 2001 Screw with the following
5.4 V8
4x4 w/ORP (17" tires and wheels)
Trailer tow package (Yes...larger radiatior installed)
3.55 LS rear end

I want to change out the 3.55 gears (front and rear)
to 4.10's for increased towing ability on mountain passes
with my 29' TT

Questions:
Whats a fair price to have this done ?
What kind of warranty comes with this ?

I called the Ford Dealer where I purchased the truck and they
said $2400.00 andf maybe more. They are calling me back
tomorrow with a firm price that would include recalibrating the
speedometer.

Seems way too much to me...I was thinking 1/2 that amount.
The truck has 10K on it and is paid for so trading it in on a
PSD is not a option.

Thanks in advance

T,

I'll take a stab at an estimate for you, but that's all I can help you with since I don't know for sure.

I'd estimate around $400 for the materials for both front and rear, maybe $500 at the worst including new bearings, lube and such. On the labor, I'd estimate between 12 and 16 hours at $60/hr or between $720 and $960 in labor.

So, my worst case estimate would be $960 labor plus $500 materials or $1460. If I were off on anything, I'd guess it's the materials more so than the labor.

I'd like to do the same but if I do, it'll be free labor since I'd do it myself. I've done gear changes quite a few times back in my drag racing days in the early '80s.

Good luck,

~DM~

I wasnt able to find many places locally that wanted to touch the product, have a friend who is a tech at a ford dealer and he didnt even want to do it. I was told approx $1800 and it came out to just under 2k for parts and labor and I thought that was high, your price is definatly high, but from what I understand the 8.8 fronts in our trucks are a real bitch to put gears in.

I got an estimate for $1250 (don't know if this is tax or not included) that includes the parts and labor for 4.10 gears on my 4x4. This is the best I have found!

As for recalibrating the spedo on any truck after 98 I belive the spedo is computer controled therefore there is no gear change for the spedo just a computer change. That should cost no more than $100.

I have talked with people who have put gears in there trucks and says that they would pay someone to do it next time. It's really hard and the tolerances are VERY tight! You want a warrenty on the work and parts and a good mechanic.

If you are having this done, I really suggest you replace the current ls with a better ls system. The OEM has a rather weak clutch. maybe even consider a switched fully locking system (ARB, or the like $$$). While the Diff is being worked on it is definitely an upgrade I would look towards.
Check into your local Off Road outfitter for their advice regarding your particular application.

Good luck.
