Hey DaveK

Do you know how to find more information about that system? Like how many sensors and cost?

I've spent a lot of time looking around and have not found information on that system from Ford.

In addition to the above information that started this thread, I recently found a couple more links of interest. One is on an OEM system, but it has very limited information on it. This is a link to that one . . .
http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/micradbacsen.html

Here is another link to a system we've seen before in this thread with a different name, a source to buy it, and a review with pictures of an installation that might be of interest to MikeF150 too.

http://www.odyclub.com/tech/poron.html

I haven't yet purchased a system yet. I know what I want, just can't write the check yet. I want the four sensor Parking-E system that MikeF150 got for the rear. I would also like to get a less expensive system for the front and mount the two outside sensors way out toward the corners for parking. I'm thinking I might put that system on a switch low on the dash and just turn it on when I want it.

Keep the info comming.

MikeF150 - I keep watching this thread waiting for the news

about your installation. I know exactly what you mean tho. I have projects I have not gotten to also. I haven't yet purchased my system either. Why don't you send your system to me and I'll install it and I'll tell you how it went .

One of the links above shows an installation in the bumper cap on a really dirty Ford bumper like ours. That's what I thought might be of interest to you.

I finally saw an Explorer with a factory system installed the other day. I followed him for 10 miles until he finally parked and asked him about it. He Loved it. It had factory shims that provided an angle up for the install. I have not seen a system with the shims anywhere. That is, in part, what peaked my interest in the system shown in one of the links above. I e-mailed a request for more information on the first link.

I will look forward to hearing from you again tho. You might still beat me yet. This is truly the tortois (sp?) and the hare .

The only thing I saw about it was on www.forddirect.com when I built a 2003 F350. MSRP for the system is $245. And from what I can remember from seeing one on the road, it had 4 sensors across the bumper.

I know it's not much information, but it's all I've got for right now. I hope it helps.

The Ford Sensor as an Option

I checked DaveKs reference, and then searched on Google etc. I have not been able to figure out what sensor system Ford uses as an option.

"Tom - on my wife's 02 Explorer, she has the factory installed system - there's four sensors in a band across the rear bumper..."
Do you have any ideas about what sensor system it is? It uses inset (drilled) into the bumper type sensors right? The one I saw had the cylindrical drilled into the bumper version.

Not the 3 1/4" x 3/4"x 3/8" thick surface mount sensors? Like these that I am considering for the front. http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wf...N/Catalog/1248

MikeF150 - What is the closest/shortest range that it will detect for you?
I take it that it just beeps right? No voice and no distance display.

It seems likely that it would be this system. I have e-mailed them to no avail so far and their website has practically no information on it. http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/micradbacsen.html

You'd think by now that the search would be over. I think that the Parking-E system is the best there is, but I want to do both front and back and that makes it pretty expensive to do the Parking-E system for both.

I will try to get some info from the dealer in the next couple of days.

Dumbass question

I'm a great guy for missing the obvious but I have to ask....

Since I am new to truckdom these things sound like a great idea. $300 for a reverse sensor is cheaper than replacing the entire front end of a Miata or whatever I end up backing into in a tight lot.

So here's the question - and I read all the installation instructions....

You attach the sensors to the bumper, and put the controller module behind the bumper right ?

Then, according to the instructions which lose all detail at this point, you run the wire into the passenger compartment to hook up to the visual display.

Ermm... how do you do that ? Do you need to drill a hole in the floor ? Run the wires along the frame rails and through the firewall ? But then how do you avoid having a fricking great wire running through your cab ? Up the A pillar and behind the headliner maybe ? Way out of my league and a sure fire way to create all kinds of rattles and loose fits.

So am I missing something here ? How do you get a wire from the bumper to the rear view mirror without taking apart half the cab panels and liner ?

Parking-E Unit installation Instructions

I totally agree about the cost avoidance benefits you cited.

Sounds like you are talking about the BackingupSafely unit. I would say two things here about information on installing the unit.

The link below has a video you can click on to see a demo on how it works whick is slow but pretty good.
http://www.stratusgroupsite.com/default.htm

This link has a video on how to install it and run the wires to the front of the cab. It takes a long time to download (depending on how patient you are and your connection speed), but will probably answer your questions about the install.
http://www.backingsafety.com/instructions.htm

I am at work right now and will check back tonight when I have more time.

OK, I'm back for atleast a few minutes.

Understand, I have not purchased or installed one of these units yet, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt. Now with that said

I think I will try to install my control unit behind the back seat in my SuperCrew on the passenger side. There is a small compartment that I think will lend itself to this applicaton well. Also, if you look in between the bed and the body (just behind the rear passenger door), there are some rubber grommets thru which I plan on running my wires. After that it seems like following the instructions shown in the video to run the wires around the headliner to the rear vision mirror. Feel the interface between the windshield and the headliner. It is easy to see what the video is describing.

The installation step that I am more concerned about than running the wires is how to get the sensors installed into the bumper and pointing the right direction for desired results.

Beyond that our salvation will be through MikeF150. I think he will be good enough to post detailed results of his install and how the unit works. (Did you like how I practically signed him up for that ) He has actually purchased the unit, I have only talked about such things. I want the 4 sensor Parking-E unit for the back and another unit for the front. Maybe the PoronUSA.com 3 sensor talking unit for the front because of cost

MikeF150 - Great! I for one . . .

will really be looking forward to your post! I'm hoping for some pictures of where the sensors were located and how that installation went. It is my best guess that even though our bumpers angle down if the sensors are just below the bumber cap they should work just fine cuz our bumbers are so high off the ground (something like 27" if I remember right).

Anyway I really look forward to your post. You're the pioneer here . . . I have only talked about this thing.

Ya, the guys kill'in me. I have held my breath (many times) waiting for this anticipated post. I really want to hear about the install, the performance results and the pictures.

When Mike150 posts his promised results he'll be my hero again cuz I haven't had the courage to go forward on this deal like he has. (I hear he's a real high roller that can afford these toys)

Anyway, I'm waiting right along with you.
