170 Thermostat

Does anyone know where I can get the cooler thermostat and what the part number would be. I have checked at NAPA and they only have 180s listed.

Thanks

If you are swapping your old 195 thermastat out youwould be better off with the 180. These engines are designed to run at a certin operating temprature. If the temp is too low you might begin to have a few engine operating problems. So unless you have it programmed into your chip I wouldnt go under a 180 thermastat.

My $0.02

What's the deal with this? is this something we should do/have done with the ATI? What temp? With the lower T-stat reprogram necessary? I gather that stock is 195 on 5.4L?

170 Stat

I tried my local Pep Boys today, they did not have a Stant 13967. Guess I will try Napa tomorrow.

the 170 is not required for the ATI. It does help though. The thermostat will not harm you in the winter time. You may want to go back to stock though just so the heater will put out more heat.

For those who do not know:

The thermostat is just a valve. It closes when cold and blocks off the rad.

the reason for it is to allow the motor to heat up faster and once it arrives at the proper temp the valve opens and allows coolant to flow through the rad. This gets the motor to full operating temperature faster and helps to maintain a constant temp.

On full race motors we have no thermostat - this allows a free-er flowing coolant system. Takes forever to come up to temp though.

On street apps it is a good Idea to keep the stat just lower the temp. A cooler motor runs better.

Hope this helped

as far as i know the only downsides to a lower temp stat are 1. worse fuel milage. this may not even apply in our situation. but i have heard tha sometimes a cooler running engine gets less MPG. and i believe that it would be a very very slight diffrence. 2. the heater doesnt get as hot because of the cooler engine. this matters none for me because i have never used my heater here in south florida.

mthunwardsen - I was unable to find the thermostat at pepboys as well. i looked at autozone but they dont even carry stant and i didnt know the correct numbers for the brand they had. let me know where you find it. i know crash said you can get them at O'reilly's but i dont have one around me.

Thanks Steve,

I am going to try Napa, but if they don't then I am just going to order one from Crash. I could not get plugs either, so I will just have to see. Thanks and good luck!

Mike Troyer put a long post in this forum a couple of weeks ago, saying DONT change the thermostat to a cooler one and listed a number of reasons.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe all of the posts recommending not going to a cooler stat were in reference to the folks without blowers.
I really don't remember seeing Mike comment on stats and blowers.
Adding a blower may change some of this. A blower mod adding 60% is not really in the same game as some of the standard bolt on mods like I have or alot of others.

Rock that is correct. For those with the digital odometer you can depress the milage reset button (keep pressed) and start the truck. Keep holding until the odometer reads test.

scroll through the test readings until you hit the one that states
degc000 this the temp guage. Warm the truck up and drive it. Watch this reading under normal load and under hard throttle runs. 93c = 199.4f

normal driving conditions it should be around 90 or so. Then under racing conditions it should rise slightly. If you are under 92 on full boost passes then you will not need the 170 and may opt for a 180. The key is to keep the temps around 92-94c.
