Up in smoke!
Up in smoke!
Yesterday on my way home from work I raced this Honda that was messing with me on the hwy. At about 4000 rpms in 3rd gear I heard something let loose in the motor. I stopped the truck hoping it was just a head gasket but I saw the tell tale sign of a hole in the piston with the valve cover breather had lots of smoke coming out of it and the oil dipstick had shot out and oil was being pushed out off it. I towed it home and pulled the motor. Lucky I own a engine lift. About six hours latter and 24 beers between me and my friend we had a melted number 5 piston in our hands. It is so funny how easy everything comes out and how hard it is to get it back in. I guess one of the injectors clogged because none of the other pistons or spark plugs showed any pinging at all.
Now the plan is fully ported PI heads with big cams, 30 over pistons, forged rods, and an intercooler to get rid of some detenation. I will update you guys on my progress as it happens. I hope to make like 450-475 rear wheel hp with my new motor. Post any suggestions on pistons and rods you guys like. Fox lake is going to port my heads for me. Hope to have it running again soon.

More Detail please.
What kind of supercharger do you use? Do you use a higher psi pulley? What engine do you have? How many miles had you put on the supercharger before engine failure? How many times do you "race" in a normal driving day?

HI!... I believe that #5 cylinder is the one that runs the leanest on the TRITON engines. The LIGHTNING guys have been having the same problem with #5 cylinder running lean. Sorry to hear about your truck.
I have a 98 f150 5.4 with a vortech supercharger. The motor has about 12,000 miles with the blower and 57,000 mile all together. I drive 30 mile to and from work a day. It has a true 10 psi pully on it. I have a custom chip to retard the timimg and add fuel. My next motor should be pretty radical with the big cams I am getting. I have already sent out the heads to be ported and the block is at the machine shop. I ordered Wiesco pistons and Manley steel rods. I thought about stroking the motor but the money is a little tight right now and this melted piston was not planned. I did the calculations and figured out that the ported heads do not flow enough for a bigger motor anyway. With some reseach I relized I would have to change to four valve heads to get enough flow for a big motor. With ported four valve heads I think I can safely bore and stroke the motor to about 370 ci and make way too much power but that is what the next motor is for.
