Wooo sounds when hot?

When my engine compartment gets hot this wwwwooooooooo sounds starts. Not the ATI Blower sounds but a wwwwooooo sounds. I can open the hood for a minute or so and then it will go away. Anyone know what this is? I think this also happen when I had an AirForce 1 back in the day but it was kinda cold out and sold it, but do remember a strang sound that I wanted to check out. I did a temp setup of boxing in the filter but it still does it after awhile. Also if I gas it just a tad the sound will go away.

Sounds good. How come it doesn't do it with the stock intake/AirFilter box? That sound is louder then the Compressor! Just might have to see about squeezing in the electric fan.....

My 98 NASCAR Edition F150 does the same thing. If it give it a little gas it quits. I don't have a SC, yet. Been driving me nuts to and my ford dealer didn't have a clue as to the cause. Keep us informed.

OK, here is what I found out so far. I took my shop vac and took off the top (to suck fresh air) and plugged the hose into the exhaust end. I opened the hood while it was making that wonderful noise and started to blow fresh air at the filter and the noise went away instantly. When I was about 4-5ft away from the filter. If I go any closer it will make the engine almost stall and that's not hold the air direct, just blowing air around. As soon as I stop blowing air at the filter the noise will come back quit quickly.

So, I dug into my fan collection and put a 4in fan at the stock opening for the filter on the fender and it helped but did no completely keep it from making the noise. Good without the air on but with the air on (AC) it will just take a bit longer to start to make the noise.

Now I got some duct to plumb down into my SS bumper cover opening and see if I can get some fresh air sucked up into the filter. I took off the plastic inner fender well and it does get better air (more air) but not enough. There's not much fresh air to be sucked in threw the fender. With my fan on you can feel the air being sucked up threw the plastic inner fender well. Could probably drill holes to make it more air flowing but.........I also put the heat shield cover I made (Ram Air box sort of) and it did nothing to help. I'll see what happens with the duct running into the bumper cover opening.

It's not that the noise makes any ill effects on driving performance but it's just annoying to hear that noise over the compressor, and if you ever heard an ATI compresor you could only wonder what could be louder then that.....................

Fixed it I hope?

I ran the duct to the front opening in my SS bumper cover to the opening in the fender. I put a 92mm tornado fan (thanks 2Cool) which has some serious cfm compared to what I had. Now you can hear the air being sucked from the opening. It's been rainy and it does not make the noise when it's cool so I leave the fan off. Today it was hot to where I had the AC on and the noise starts, well all day it was working great. The only time it starts the noise is after I am parked and I start it up it will make the sound for a moment. The new 92mm fan is loud but you can not hear it over the ATI Compressor so it's no big deal. The truck runs great. I will give air temp differences with tje 92mm fan on and off, while driving etc...........

I also have temp difference between the air temps coming out of the compressor and the air temps at the T-Body. Some big differences there!!!!! And with the intercooler pipes wrapped in the aluminium stick heat tape and with the new graphite black color header wrap on them. The alum stuff is not bad but the heat will just start to make it come off the pipes in the engine compartment. With the New header wrap, much better in keeping the heat off the pipes. I didn't think the temps would be that different by just wrapping the pipes but.................the parts of my intercooler pipes that are in the engine area are so hot you couldn't even touch them. But I didn't think the heat would transfer that much to make the intake air temps differ.

I also made a screen to put in the bumper bec I'm sure it will suck crap up there. So I used a nice Boston Pro series grill and cut it to the opening to keep the bugs mostly from getting up in the duct.

It works for now, but I'll see how long it will work for.

Am I missing something here, or could this simply be the fan clutch kicking in to grab the fan and cool the radiator?

Might be missing something, guess you have to be there to experience it. It's absolutley not the fan clutch, though. I even took the engine fan off just to check if it was the fan doing this. Since it only take about 10sec to take it off. Then I would have just slapped on an electric primary fan but that wasn't the case. I gather that having the ATI not suck in all of the hot engine air is a benefit, see what happens.

Also if it were the clutch fan, this noise would be there with the stock air intake, but it's not. But I took it off anyway just to make sure, ya never know............

BTW: when it was really hot out and I had the AC cranking (front and rear) even if I gave it gas it would not go away, the sound that is.

I won't get into anymore and clutter up the SC forum with this fan clutch problem.

Finially tracked down exactly what the problem is and it's not the rad fan, getting cooler air is also not the problem. I know nobody really cares but if you do just e-mail me.

The 2 hoses that goto adapter by the elbows, crankcase breather and round box type thing by the fire wall, 5.4L? smaller sized, and I lenghtened a bit. The hose that goes to the box, I just reduced it right out of the box (at the elbow) and lengthened the hose. I just had the same size hose from the elbow at the blower right to the black round breather type thing. (anyone know what that box is? I didn't look it up yet or what it does) If you squeeze the hose it should decrease the sound. I gather there is to much air in that line. I also made cranckcase breather hose the same size as it is stock.

I did get e-mails that this sound/issue was also on regular intakes, AF1, K&N etc systems also. I replied with what I did and it worked for them. The only thing is that on the 4.6L owners the box is at the t-body area?.......(not familiar with the 4.6) but reducing the adapter size hose or something in that area did the trick. Maybe those cats will reply hear with better info.

If I put my ear to the filter you can hear that sound faintly. It's been crazy hot lately and I have the front and rear AC cranking (engine bay crazy hot) and not a peep or hint of that crazy ridicuals sound, just all blower whine, thank goodness.......................If I had hair I would have started to pull it out if I didn't fix that annoying issue. At least I got a nice cool air intake system now from all this.....................if you ever check where the hole in the fender goes? nowhere...............sucks in fender air maybe air gets in there between the slit from the headlight and parkinglight.
