Front Heat Exchanger for Magnacharger

I just bought a six month old Magancharger. The previous owner (nice guy, had an Harley) had replaced the front air to water exchanger with the radiator from an MG midget. He claimed it worked way better.

I took the stock exchanger but was wondering if anyone has measured the coolant temp in the magnacharger circuit to see what kind of temp it reaches. I remember that Neil made a comment on it a while ago.

I'm thinking it could be replaced by a Lightning heat exchanger - any thoughts?

HI!... When I get my MAGNACHARGER next year I plan on custom fabricating a extremely large aftercooler for it. Since I have no A/C, I'm going to build a 4 core aluminum aftercooler that will fi in where the old A/C condensor was. This aftercooler will have the same surface area as the factory rad. Also "HPP" is in the prototype stages right now designing and building a cool can for the intercooler fluid.

I found this thread in a search.....my search for more intercooler cooling power. The search function for this site is the best I have ever seen!

Heres whats going on.....

99' F-150 4.6m with Allen (Magna) kit with 11-12 pound bazooka boost prototype pulley and.....PINGING! Although, I think that my pending chip-reburn will cure most if not all of the pinging, since there is no way I could be putting out more heat than a 21 lb. boosted roots lightning (discharge temps for that set-up can be over 300 degrees and still they get no pinging), I do have a intercooler system designed for 5 pounds of boost, yet I have more than doubled that amount.

I know I need to increase cooling capacity. I replaced the 100% anti-freeze fluid with a mixture of distilled water, water wetter type stuff and anti-freeze. It will still ping. If temps are 50 degrees or below, it will not ping if I slam the gas while driving along at highway speeds, but it will still ping if I slam the gas at take-offs. If temps drop below 40 degrees, it will not ping on take-offs.

I have been trying to determine if running another Allen heat exchanger and a Lightning reservoir, tank in series, with my existing heat exchanger and "pop can" sized reservoir tank, will do the trick. Then Neal posted something on got-pressure.com about having a radiator size heat exchanger made. Then I thought, what about using a condensor. However, I can not find a condensor that uses 5-8ths tubing. Then, I thought, why can I not use a small radiator as a heat exchanger (I do not know if my Jabsco "Puppy" water pump was strong enough to make enough flow with an actual engine radiator)

Then I did this search and found where Ian bought his kit from a guy that used a MG radiator as his Magna heat exchanger! I also found a thread that showed JDM's new Lightning heat exchanger. It looks like a small drag racing radiator! Here are my options to cool blower temps down, please comment:

1. Buy another heat exchanger (looks like a trans. cooler) just like the one I have from Allen (magna) and buy a Lightning reservoir tank from fordpartsonline.com and run them in series with my existing stuff.

2. Buy a small drag racing engine radiator and use it as a heat exchanger (jeggs and summit sell them).

3. Go to a salvage and look for a small engine radiator like a MG and use it as a heat exchanger.

4. Have my current "pop can" size reservoir tank modified to increase capacity to 1 to 2 gallons.

5. Put fans on either the current, or additional or other heat exchangers

6. Get I biz I found, to make me a chiller that hooks into the ac system.

7. Try to locate a "Saleen" supercharger kit heat exchanger (it is suppose to be twice the size of the Allen (magna) version and have fans)

Boy this is an old post.....

Are you sure that the problem is the heat? With more boost, you need to retard the timing and that may be what is causing the pinging.

The magnacharger kit has two HE's - one in the manifold and one on the rad. If you just add to the rad side, you still have the manifold HE as the limit on the system.

I'd also make sure the Hobbs switch is jumpered or removed because the system can't shed heat when off boost if the pump isn't running.

One thing I was thinking of trying was to put a sensor block in one of the hoses to monitor the coolant temp in the system.

I have seen one thing to be true time and time again, over the past year. Ian knows his "stuff"! As well as your "tech twin", signmaster.....

I did not realize that there are two heat exchangers. According to another Allen (Magna) user with a 9 pound pulley on a 4.6 that has pinging, his dyno showed his chip timing to be "20". The tuner said it needs to be around "15" or visa versa. Therefore, that could be my only problem. I am waiting on a chip re-burn. As well as I did not get a dyno tune like the tuner recommended.

Also, my heat exchanger tank never gets hot. But, I saw where, Lightnings with roots blowers and 21 pounds of boost were putting out 300 degrees of discharge heat. The use of a "drag racing" type radiator as the heat exchanger, dramatically reduced discharge temps.

Also, I do not know if I should change my thermostate to a cooler one. Or, could I have too much carbon or oil getting in the manifold since I have not installed a pvc "by-pass" set-up yet.

YO! Ray,

.....so is your chip timing at "20" and needs to be around "15" to stop the pinging according to the other tuner or visa versa.....

According to the local tuner, the timming should be advanced no more than 15 degrees. Presently I'm at 20 which in his opinion explains why I'm getting a combination of hesitation and pinging.

As Ian pointed out, you essentially have two radiators. One in the manifold that collects heat, and then the one you see that gets rid of the heat. Cooling the water mixture further will help, but there is only so much you can do.

Drag boats have a huge supply of cool water (the lake they run in) and they still use massive heat exchanges on top of the engine. Many of these are as large or larger than the blower itself. They probably have a heat exchanger surface area 10-12 times that of a Magnacharger truck kit, and they simply dump the water back into the lake, replacing it with fresh water. Some also use a dual system, with one raw water and one self contained. This way the self contained unit can be iced down.

Ian has another great point about the intercooler temp. If the current radiator is already wicking away the majority of heat there is probably little left to do. If it's not, then adding capacity and more cooling capability would help more.




In time I think we will see some positive displacement applications go to air to air intercoolers. Right now mounting space is the main problem, but I have seen pictures on certain applications where the blower is offset to the side and uses a discharge tube.

Thanks for your comments. Yours and Ian's comments always provide critical info. to consider.

The main reason I thought of using a small radiator is due to JDM's new Lightning heat exchanger. It appears to be dramatically reducing the 21+ boosted roots blower discharger temps. It is a small all aluminum radiator (looks like a drag racing radiator) as opposed to a trans cooler type heat exchanger. You and Ian also hit on a point that Scott from Allen Engine Development stated. He said, "The best you can do is ambient temps". My heat exchanger tank never gets hot, so it may be that the chip timing needs adjusting.

But, I found a shop in Houston, Tx., that can make me a "chiller" that hooks into the a/c system for around $400 bucks.

I found an afco radiator site, that allows a person to "custom" order a radiator in the size needed with whatever connections you need. I still may try that as well.

I checked on motorcycle radiators like Ian suggested. They are perfect! Some even come with fans with prices from $40 to $80 bucks for most. However, they look almost "too small"?

You mean the guy in Houston, Tx that makes the chillers In the Blower Tuning Section, in the Got Pressure forums at www.trixtersracing.com, I listed all his contact info. in a post on page 15 of the "Bazooka Boost Pulley is In" thread. Infact, the owner of the biz is waiting to hear from YOU! hehe

He told me he was making the AC chillers long before the Lightning concept truck came out (over 4 years ago). He said he can make "real chillers" for Liquid to Air or air to air for superchargers or turbos. He said he can make a very basic and simple set-up or make them even more complex than the one in the Lightning concept truck.

His prices are very low compared to others.
