Back in business at 8 psi

So when I bought my used Whipple, it came with a 6 psi pulley. I never had a reason to go to 8 psi other than the want for more. I had looked around for a used 8 psi pulley at a good price, but never could come across one. Then on Thursday, I had this happen while cruising down the highway at 70...

I wasn't in boost at all. All 4 bolts sheared off of the pulley, threw it into the bottom of the hood, and over into the side of the engine bay. Belt didn't like that and snapped. So, call up a wrecker and get it towed 40 miles back home and order some parts

So, I got the pulley hub off and took it to a machine shop. They were going to charge $75/hour to redrill the holes, tap them, and check the hub was still running true. They said it should take an hour if everything goes as planned, but if anything goes wrong, it would be longer. After calling up Whipple, I found out the hub was $110 new, so I didn't want to take the risk and just ordered a new one. Since I needed a new pulley anyway (6 psi pulley had its holes elongated), I went ahead and ordered a 8 psi pulley as well. Also, ordered a new serpintine belt from lightningmotorsports.com.

The last package got in today and was a quick and easy installation. Got a jump start from my roommate and took it for a test drive. First impressions was it was much smoother than my old pulley. If you saw one of my old posts, I had seen my pulley have somewhat of a wobble at times when idling. That is gone now. When I compared the old pulley hub/pulley combo to the new one, the new one is a much tighter fit. There was about a 1/16" of play with that old one, which I'm guessing attributed to the wobble and the bolts ultimately shearing off. Oh, and I love the extra 2 psi. I'm getting 6 psi WOT with this one (had 4 psi WOT with the old one), but I've been told that's typical kind of loss I should expect.

Looks like your front seal was leaking for a while too. I had to change mine cause it was leaking fairly good. Now with the new one its starting to get a little damp again. With a 3" pulley I put so much belt tension on it I'm sure its great for the bearings and seal.

The direct drive set up is a little Naf IMO.

The pulley boss is just pressed into the hub and held together with the 12pt nut.

If anyone wants a spare DD then drop me a PM.

Yeah, it is leaking some. Enough to leave a coating of grease all over things there, but not enough that I think I need to change it yet... I just keep an eye on the oil sight glass to make sure I'm not loosing oil too fast.
