NO Help From The Exhaust Forum!
I wanted some opinions/experience from S/C'ed guys running LTs, not the bickering back & forth I'm finding in the Exaust forum.
I just had American Racing catted LTs installed running to two "existing" Flowmaster mufflers. (I don't know the series, but I'm tinking they are 40s). My buddy/installer says the thing is EXTREMELY loud now, and that's exactly what I didn't want!!
The truck sounded perfect before the switch to LTs, now I'm trying to get back to that sound. The SCOA guys are saying switch to Maggies (although unsure of the exact P/N) and I read mixed reviews on ALL mufflers. My initial thought is to try different FM mufflers (Super 50 or 70 series), but don't know for sure.
The headers have 1.75" primaries and 3" collectors with 2.5" pipes running to two mufflers and 2.25" running out the back. For starters, I'm having my buddy install an "H" pipe and change the 2.25" out for 2.5", and finally change mufflers, hence my dilemma.
Any experience you can share would be greatly appreciated!
BTW, I'm out of the country, so this is all the info. I can provide.

Some have found either adding a glasspack/muffler before the installed mufflers has helped....they act as resonators......or go with a longer bodied muffler.....

Ha! That's why anything dealing with an sc'd truck we post here. Even tire selection. The other areas of the site while helpful for most are pretty much useless when your sc'd. You'll have douche bags telling you to run straight pipes. Sad thing is they actually believe it sounds better than anything else. Like comparing a ny strip to a mcdonalds cheeseburger.
Anyway I am partial to Magnaflow and Borla. Like anything else you get what you pay for. I had Flowmasters one time and they went on ebay within 2months. But before I get into the muffler stuff can I ask if you plan on adding any more power to the truck? Also will your exhaust be equipped with Mandrel bends? If the shop is not capable of this think seriously about going 3" so you will at least be at 2.25-2.50" in the bends. Also consider an x-pipe instead of the h-pipe.
Now for mufflers look at the Magnaflow. http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/universalmuffler.asp Part numbers 11246,11249 are the 4x9 which will provide you plenty of sound while not annoying you. 12576,12579, are 5x11 and will be a bit quieter due to the larger body. My experience with Magnaflow has always been positive. Quiet while crusing and taking off easy but thunderous under hard throttle. These four part numbers I listed are all long bodies and will offer the quietest performance.
I am presently running the 12568 and Im pleased. I have thought about making it quieter for the added sleeper effect and when I talked to Troyer about it he recommend the 4x9 I listed above. I like the 12568 though as it offers an internal x-pipe and all the flow I need in one muffler. Saves weight which is important when your hauling ***. I have an external xpipe as well.

My guess is you're running 14" body mufflers. 18" is best if you have 2 mufflers one on each pipe. Or 22" if you use a single dual in dual out muffler. I run longtubes but no cats and a single 18" and it was to loud for me. I think a 22" would have been perfect, or if I ran 18" on each pipe would have been great too
I think I blew the innards out of mine. They are discolored now because of the heat.

I have had long tubes for a long time. I started with 3" high flow cats reduced down to 2.5" into a x-pipe then into a DI/DO 11" body magnaflow side exit lightning style when I was N/A. That was a loud set up sounded like a NASCAR. Then I went FI with the same exhaust and it was ludacris loud. So getting older and wanting to have a conversation in the cab while cruising I had the exhaust changed to a full 3" mandrel bent exhaust with x-pipe into 2 2 chamber flowmasters with tail pipes over the axel Harley style. That was probably the best sound I liked but it was still too loud and the back pressure difference was unreal. I have band clamps holding the cats on the collectors and when I first put the flowmasters on I blew the exhaust off of the headers within 15 miles of driving, had to tack weld the cats on to the collectors to keep exhaust system on. Well after a couple of months the flowmasters were getting too drony for my liking and I bit the bullet and bought 2 22" long 5x11 magnaflows #12589 and installed them. Now I can actually hold a conversation with someone in the back seat, it has a nice rumble at idle not to loud while spirited driving but it does sound mean when I go WOT. I do miss the loud sometimes but I am pleased with this setup for now.

One of my bud's told me about his friends 03 cobra with 4 or 6 mufflers on the car? My guess is he is running Magnaflow mufflers and possibly a couple magnapacks? All he told me was the car sounds pretty tame for having some ridiculous power at the wheels with a 3.4 whipple on the car. I just can't see how you could fit that many mufflers on the pipes.
Most German cars come with mufflers and separate resonators (another muffler) to eliminate drone and loud tone.

He is probably counting the 4 cats as mufflers also...lol
If I had a picture you would be a believer. It goes back to having a California car and playing nice with the LEO's if you dare step into the 20+ psi on the street. If you counted the metallic race cats, then sure, bring the number of crap on the pipes up to 8 LOL!
