Cam Phaser noise
Cam Phaser noise
Is this my cam phaser's or something else that is fixing to go south. It has started doing it more lately, it is around 800-1300 rpm with a load on it. I cant hear it in neutral or park but only in drive. It does sound like it is coming from the cam phaser locations, primarly the driver side. I do have 140K+ on the valve train components and timing chains, the cam phaser's were replaced at 80K when I rebuilt the motor as a precaution. Wondering if I have a full valve train replace on hand. The heads did receive a valve job and port at 80K also. ANy help to this would be appreciated.

I'm not sure, but I just had a friend with a 2009 develop a cam phaser problem. It was very apparent at idle without any load. I'd remove the belt to rule out any drive accessories or idler pulleys.
Hard to tell. Listen to this vid and compare http://m.youtube.com/?rdm=4ok72tt0j&...?v=vacm3aBZ1to
Link didnt work.
A couple more things I have noticed. When I put a long extension to my ear at the front of the valve cover it is the loudest, my city driving fuel milage as tanked(no pun intended) and I get a feeling like the truck is being held back like it is extremely retarded on the timing then all of a sudden it "free's up" and she is back to her self again. On the freeway she drives just fine but in traffic in low RPM's she is just not right. Does anybody know what a VCT solenoid does when it is going bad? does it just die or will it act sporatic. Also it seems to do this once the motor is warmed up.

Typically when a solenoid goes it just goes. I would start there before tearing into the motor again. Hope you get it figured out.

I am leaning towards the timing chain the more I think about this. It only does it under deacceleration which could mean a bad chain tensioner and the noise I am hearing could be the chain hitting the timing cover. I will need to do an oil change and put a filter in a funnel as the oil comes out to see of there are any metal particals in the oil.
