Towing needs

I'm looking to buy a 150 and need some suggestions. I have a 16' boat now and am looking to upgrade to an 18 or 20' pontoon boat. I have heard that the 150 will tow it, but I just want to be sure. Which is better a supercharger or turbocharger? Also, I'd be using my truck for off roading and such, so I would want something that wouldn't get messed up by mud and dirt and such. Is there any way to boost up the torque and stuff without a turbo or supercharger? Thanks in advance.

Also, I forgot to ask, how much gas would a supercharger waste since it runs off of the power of the motor?

Buy a 5.4L and a tuner if you want to tow!

How much is one of those tuners? Getting a 5.4 is tougher than it seems where I live. Most of the ones around here are the 4.6s.

Well now, there's so many dif things you can do here. For starters Pontoon boats are extremely light. So you can basically get any f150 with the 4.6 if you wanted (although i'd recommend the 5.4) Second off you don't need a supercharger unless you want to spend the extra money...As far as the gas issue goes. I have a 07 supercharged Harley Davidson edition and i get about 13.5 city and up to about 16 highway. However my truck isn't tuned. completely stock other than a cherry bomb muffler swap. Offroad wise there isn't a vehicle in the world that won't mess up if you don't know how to take care of it. I personally wouldn't suggest taking a supercharged truck offroad (especially if you plan to put it in mud or water etc.) But if you have the money to blow on fixing things have at it bud. And tuner's really depend on which one you go with. Go up to the tuner's part of the forum and ask for a good tuner. And i'd give you a ballpark price of a tuner (good one) anywhere from $300+

My suggestion to you if you want to save money would be an Supercab XLT 4x4. Unless your looking for luxury in that case you can go with the lariat or KR. Either way any of the 150s 2 or 4wd with the 5.4 will pull that pontoon like it isn't even there. I personally won't pull anything over a jet ski with a 2wd truck when it comes to boat launches. *Like to have 4wd for extra traction reguardless of boat size, although it's not always needed* But it comes down to you and your pocket book in the end. The possiblities are endless...

Thank you very much. I thought that a pontoon boat would be heavy, but I guess it is not. I definitely don't have the money to blow on fixing superchargers if I take it offroad, so I guess I will just have to try and find a 5.4. I would not get a 2 wheel drive truck anyhow unless I got it for free or its a Lightning or Harley Davidson Edition. I just gotta keep saving up and get the big motor. I could really care less about super luxury because after all it is a truck, but I do like the super crew with the four full doors. Thanks guys.

You would be amazed what a gear change will do for these trucks. I dont think it will change with the 3 valve trucks as much as the 2 valves since the 3v usualy come with 3:73 from factory. I went from 3:55 to 4:10 and it was a world of difference.

Ok. Thanks for the suggestion. How would I check to see the gear ratio whenever I buy the truck from someone?

Just ask the person you purchase from. If the current owner has done any changes to the tranny or truck, he should be able to tell you everything. If he hasn't then you can just google what size tranny came in that year model truck from the factory.

They all use the same transmission. To determine gear ratios in the axles, you need to look up the axle code. It would be on the sticker on the door jamb.

Or just peak underneath at the axle tag. Look for the numbers. Also look for the letters LS. That means it has a limited slip which your gonna want pulling a boat up outta the water.
