My L swap thread.
My L swap thread.
I have done a lot of searching and a lot of reading. I would like to start a thread now because I have a few basic questions. I had a thread earlier about the lower pulley but would like to start one for the whole swap start to finish because I am sure I am going to have more questions along the way. I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row so when install time comes I don't have my truck sitting while I wait for odds and ends if you know what I mean. This is going on my N/A motor
There is a local guy here that has an 04L that I will be able to go and take pictures of his engine bay to look it over with my parts which will hopefully help.
I SHOULD have everything here except, the throttle and cruise cables and a fuel pump. My felpro intake gaskets and tr6 plugs I am picking up on friday. I am more than likely missing some of the original install bolts as well.
I have an 01 setup which does have the 10 row intercooler and the eaton that says Ford SVT on it.
Lets start with my original question is this the stock lower pulley or what kind of pulley is it? It looks like where it is ribbed would be 7.5" or damn near where it is ribbed.

I have been running 0/30 amsoil it should I run a heavier weight?
I have read about oil separators and would like to run one. What is a good one I should go with?
The stock heat exchanger tank is mounted to the fan shroud correct? I have been running efans with out a fan shroud. Should I modify the shroud around my efans and mount the tank to that or should I try mounting it some where else? What have others done?
I will take some pictures of the heat exchanger and stuff to make sure I have all the brackets needed to mount it properly.
Thank You

The pulley looks to be stock because it has stock type mounts. Stock is supposed to be 7.4" and measured at the pulley surface, not the outer edges of the lip. Your guess at 7.5" is close enough to rule out other possibilities.
If it were me, and I did this with my Roush, I would get the Metco Motorsport pulley and center ring. That will allow you to use whatever sized crank pulley you want or swap them out as needed. It also reduces weight on the crank snout. I can't answer your intercooler tank mounting questions, but I'm running e-fans and I had to make my own bracket to mount the tank. If the tank mounts to the factory shoud, you probably will too.
Granted I have a 3v motor with VCT, but I'm running 5w/20. I'm sure you could run 0/30 without any problems, but it's not necessary.

I can't find much information on the JDM caged pulley and they no longer list it on their website. Based on what little information I found, the pulley should be aluminum and was pressed onto the stock lightning cage. See article here. The article says the pulley is larger than stock, but Metco's website gives the stock Lightning pulley diameter of 7.4". Maybe Tarajerame can give more information about it.
As I posted previously, Metco shows their stock Lightning/HD replacement pulley at 7.4", their +2 pulley at 8" and the +4 at 8.6". The pulley in your picture might be slightly larger than stock. Just doing the math, if it measures 7.7", it would be +1 psi. The upper pulley would also have an effect on how much boost you're capable of producing.
the lower pulley measures exactly 24 5/8 circumference which divided by pi equals 7.838" in diameter right at the outer most part of the ribs. I still have to measure the upper but it is raining like crazy here and didn't feel like going to the shed to measure it.
tarajerame I thought that was some sort of a sarcastic remark lol

Its probably a +2 lb pulley which is the 8ish inch range. Concur with going aftermarket 2 piece pulley. Adds more flexibility. Cage pulley elimnates all loads on crank snout that is why Ford used it. Crank only turns pulley vice handling any side loads caused by blower belt. Only real down side is its more expensive to change pulleys and you have to remove when replacing alternator belt. There is also the disimiliar metal issue with the drive that attaches to the crank and screws into the pulley. Real PITA. For uppers, 3.16 was stock HD and 2.93 was stock L. Its better to go bigger on bottom than smaller on top, it minimizes belt slippage.

I just measured the upper pulley and the circumfrance at the ribs is 9 5/16". Divide that by pi again and i get 2.964" diameter which must be the stock L upper pulley. Are there any direct replacement light weight lower pullies that keep the stock boost?
LFP. However they cost the same basically no matter what size. You could go +2 wwith no problem. Even +4 could work with good tune and low redline and no drag racings. NLOC, Lightningrodder good soirce for used pulleys, but stock will be hard to find used.
Two question. Yes you can get a stock sized aftermarket lower from

What if I keep this lower pulley and mount a harley upper pulley to it? that would run 8 psi? How do you remove the upper pulley can you just use a 3 jaw puller because I see all these "special" tools that you need you need to buy from these companies in order to do it.
+10 lbs OK. And yes you need a special puller, however I have never tried to remove with a 3 jaw. If you interested I have a factory HD upper. Would be ore then happy to sell to you say 25 to your door. Let me know!
