Unhappy Supercharger surging at low RPMs

I have a 06 5.4 screw with magnacharger. When accelerating lightly, the truck surges 3-4 times like you were on the gas then letting off. Its hard hard to explain without making the engine noise but its like full boost- no boost- full boost etc then smooths out . Wide open throttle it runs great but just average driving around town it is a real bear.

Now I have been to three different tuners and the last one (a supporting vendor) believes it is a mechanical issue. I called magna and they said its the tune.

Any thoughts from the collective?

have you made sure there is no vacuum leaks may try sparying some brake cleaner or carb cleaner around manifold and see if rpm raises how long has blower been on and did this start from the beginning or over time

Yes I tried shooting the ether to it but couldn't notice in change. When I have a spare day I might pull everything off and check the gaskets. thanks

The supercharger has been on for almost two years.

this started several months ago. the truck sat for about 6 months before.

I'd try cleaning the MAF sensor also. A dirty MAF wire can cause some serious drivability issues. C&R's aerosol MAF cleaner does a good job.

Thanks Crash and Windsor. I will clean the IAC and TB tonight before I start disassembling. I did clean the MAF. Not throwing codes. The truck only has about 14k on it so I doubt there is much carbon build up but I hope it is something that simple.

What fuel was in the tank? E85, or gasoline? Could be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter from sitting for 6 mos. I really don't think this is the MAF or IAC. IAC usually only gives a problem with idling, not driveablility from all the problems I've seen on them.

Would be nice to see what the air/fuel mixture is doing, as well watch the boost gauge. A visit to a dyno would allow you to at least see what's going on in more detail.

Blower on the truck for about a year without any issues. Some minor pinging so I decided to get it tuned. Took it to a local mustang SCT guy who could not figure out the tune. Went to a second tuner who has went through the tune several times with datalog and says it has to be mechanical.

The symptoms are touchy throttle (bad), surging and pinging at partial throttle. Wide open/ 3000 rpm+ runs perfect.

I only run premium non-ethanol gas.

I would love to put it on the dyno but haven't found any local I would trust...

Mine pinged right from the get go, did it start pinging after it sat or before when it was new? The surging did that start after the tuner got a hold of it or before? Some tuners I don't think know how to work with the drive by wire we have. Maybe they did something and possibly jacked it up. Did you still have a copy of the original magna tune that came with the kit? If so try to load it up and see if the surging issue goes away, pinging may be there as a few of us have had that issue and had to get the trucks re-tuned.

Did you get this figured out? I'm having the same issues with my 2007 Harley F-150 with Saleen blower.

my guess.. there is not enough timing at idle have him set the timing in closed throttle to min of 12-15 degree of advance. any less and the engine is going to surge due to it needing to make enough power to keep the rotating momentum going. the PCM controls the idle with 3 things , Timing first, then the throttle position/IAC, then fuel. if you have SCT data log your idle and part throttle operations. mine surges on decelleration and the timing will drop to -2 and surge back to +10.

Did you try cleaning the TB yet? My 06 whippled mustang has done this before and cleaning the TB made the difference.

Did you ever find out what the problem was. It has been some time from this post, but I am having the same problem with "blower surge."

sounds like a dirty MAF or bad fuel
