Lightning went boom....
Intresting, bear with me though cause I'd like to understand this. I've done numerous punches under 40mph. I love it cause it downshifts to 1st and feels like a rocket. Now lets say I'm riding along at 58mph and I want to pass someone so I punch it. Truck downshifts and pulls like hell. How is this any different or anymore stressful. It seems like punching it in higher gears would be less streesful cause these gears are for lack of a better way of putting it...easier to turn. I sure as hell don't wanna blow it up so help understand it.
If you drive the built one like that a lot, You will blow it up too.

@ 110mph and WOTthat Lightning was nowhere near ready to shift to OD....
I'm here till 2012 I'm sure you will see my truck around its a small area here on the cape.
2nd/3rd gear puts more stress on the motor due to the longer gearing and the heightened amount of time in the higher RPM range.
You will eventually window a block at your power level.
Don't punch it, ease into it. You can do half throttle or so, let the truck shift gears, then punch it.
This is a problem all factory truck 5.4 motors have, and has been known in the 2valve blown community for a long time. Go read on any lightning forum, and I would imagine 75% of blown 5.4 motor cases are doing 60+ punches on the highway.
The GT-500 and Ford GT don't have this problem as they have much stronger rods from the factory.

this goes for the 4.6 guys too i would assume?
So do you recommend taking it out of OD before getting on interstate or before going to pass someone? or is that just as bad?
I always turn OD off until I'm on the highway. I don't need it flip flopping in and out of OD in city driving.
that hurt your mpg's driving wth OD off in the city all the time
Ok so I was on my way back home from the store running about 55-60 when a L pulls up to play I figure I dont have a chance but I give it a go and I'm right beside him till we get to about 110 and I start to pull on him next thing I notice is SMOKE coming from the L, then he pulles it over so I spin around the guy shakes my hand with a smile and said you won! lol. I looked over the engine she was coverd with oil on the drivers side and it was just dumping out on the left side of the bolck. I felt bad for the guy he was telling me his mods 4lb lower sct tune and intake. he said the motor was old with 74K on it lol I should have told him mine has 93K lol well I hope you enjoy my lil story I think I'll smile ear to ear for the next few days

not as severe there is less inertia on the pistons and small end of the rod due to less travel distance. my high mileage 4.6 has never seen this issue in the past 20K miles under 9-10psi of boost on a 3200 stall.
