Sts or Allen?

Hi, I am currently in Iraq and has been looking at the STS turbo kit for 03' ford trucks. I have a 4.6 so kits are hard to comeby and I have only found the one on Toyer website and the sts kit. I will do this if I decide to reenlist for anouther 4years I will get a nice fat bonus which will burn a hole in my pocket. If this was yall what kit would you go w/ and why. Thanks Nick

Oh I will mostly do onroad, no racing...well maybe a few boost launches but I do like to offroad, nothing big I only have 31's.

I don't think the STS kit would be good for off road,,but not sure.

I had the Allen kit on my 5.4 and it was a very nice kit.

Allen is probably the one you want but, there out of business so you will have a hard time getting one.

I agree with Phil the STS is probably not off road friendly the filter is just sitting undre the truck by the frame rails. you would need to watch out for sticks, brush water and other things that could grab the filter and i'm sure you would need to clean the filter often

the sts kit you can run intake piping back up to the under the hood and have your airfilter in the stock location.

or you can get a used centrufigal and over pulley is and use an external wastegate to keep the PSI down on your engine. (see the mm&ff article)

do you have any experience with superchargers or turbos?

I did not know that Im sure there would be a lot of bends along the way to mess with the air stream. Would the long intake take away some performance ?

with a topped breather like the old semi's used to run he would be fine and still get plenty of air

My experience on boosted engines isn't hands on, mostly what I have read and seen on my buddys heavily moddified diesels. Toyer still has the allen kit on his website so they should be in stock right? The STS kit recomends a Outerwears prefilter on there kits. They also have a video of there Tacoma doing donuts in pretty deep puddles w/out sputtering. I figured also that I could make a crossmember to shield the turbo and use Safari snorkel modified to run inbetween the bed and cab(of course this is all speculation because I can't measure the clearence right now) and comeout right next to my toolbox. What do yall think of that?

that might work, but you may end up cutting a hole in the bed cause there isn't much room between the bed and cab... the snorkle is exactly what I was talking about, run that on the drivers side and then a large single pipe or 2 dual stacks on the passenger side...

Yea I also thought of cutting a hole in the bed but man I hate to do that. If I did I figure that the space inbetween the toolbox and side of the bed would work good. Don't want to sound dumb but are you talking about exaust stacks like most diesel boys are running? Or do you mean to have one just as the intake and one as the exaust to make it look even.

If I ever get another V-10 superduty 4X4 that's the route I'll go with an STS, only I'll have one as the breather/intake (on the drivers side)
and the passenger side I'll have 2 smaller stacks turned slightly out so I can get the same sound on both sides of the truck...

on a superduty it'd look good, with a 150 you'll have to get the right size stacks to avoid looking silly (but at least you'll have a offroadable setup)

yea I don't think that I could pull of the stacks. Unless I was rolling smoke out of them I think most of my buddies would laugh at me. V-10 that would be a great idea IMO. I just watched Fast & the Furious again and figured I would look bad *** w/ a working roof air intake haha. I am almost as tempted to just cut a hole in my cab and run it right by my head so I can really hear the turbos. Man if only I had these kinda ideas back in the states...

Do not put an STS on an off road truck! You are going to crush one of the pipes or pull one off and you will walk home. Donuts in the water is nothing. First time you fight with a rut or a log under the mud you will pull off a pipe. Get high centered on a rock and look out.
Besides the lag in boost of a turbo being spooled by exhaust gas a mile away is horrendous. To play off road you need both low down power for crawling and top end for high speed runs. Get a supercharger. If you still want to run pipes out to the back of your truck install a body lift and run the pipes between the frame and the cab.
