question about supercharging
question about supercharging
I have seen alot of diesels with 100 horse tunes that break drive line parts, if I were to supercharge my 03 5.4L Fx4 wouldn't I have to have transmission and gearing work done too?
You should be fine. Search these forums, lots of guys run blowers with stock drivelines. Some of us even tow heavy loads with a blower.
I suggeset a valve body and a tranny cooler, but not everyone does that, either.
Those modded diesels put out huge torque, that's typically what breaks driveline parts.

Yep, I tow way over what the factory says is max for my 01 SCAB, 4x4, 5.4. I have the Procharger with the stock 9# boost pulley and that gives me all the power I need to pull my 9000# boat and trailer. Been running this set-up for just over a year now. I have the class 3 towing package which includes a tranny cooler, I also installed a tranny temp. gauge to monitor it. All summer long in the Phoenix desert heat, my tranny stays cool. The valve body is a good idea but not absolutly needed. These trucks can handle alot more power with no problems. I have a 12# boost pulley and will soon be installing it along with a tune to boot.

Thanks for the input I hope to have the money to do this in the next year or 2. It seems like a long way off but the truck is still under warranty once that is over I am going to start working on it.
More tranny mods are needed with a roots or twinscrew vs a cent. I built my tranny up in the beginning but there are a few parts that are weak for big wheels/big hp situations. All depends on what you are going to do and just how much power you plan to make. I think the bigger tires have alot to do with it.

I don't plan on having a full on drag truck, just enough to hang with the modded diesels around here. Most of them only have programmers, exhaust and intakes so it shouldn't be hard to keep up with them if I got a supercharger.
Brahmus is correct that big tires create drivetrain problems. The bigger the tire the bigger to torque arm levering on the drivetrain parts.
My experience is with a valve body on your Tranny you'll be good to about 350-400 RWHP. Of course everything is relative, I don't brake torque the rears nor do I race the truck from stop light to stop light. Best bet is to put in the valve body and start saving money for a Monster Box tranny to replace your current slushbox when it finally dies.

Although mine is a 2 wheeler, I run 3:55's with my charger. I wouldn't mine trying 4:10's but only because I'd like to have more out of the hole. From 60+, it kicks butt. I put a Factory Tech plate in my tranny....For 75 bucks, I think it's worth every penny.
