Wastegates

Ok guys truck project is going good...Have a question about wastegates...I have 2 HKS 50mm wastegates...However come to find out they are set to 10psi...they dont sell 7psi springs for it...is there a way to modify these, or boost controllers, they were like $500 each...which would be a better way to go?

Wow, them bastards are expensive. I would trade them suckers in on a couple 38mm Tial WGs and stick the rest of the money in your pocket.

If you don't want to do that, a lot of times springs from different WG manufactures will fit other brand WGs. So if you can find a 7 psi spring from another brand 50mm WG, then it probably would work just fine. Of if you can find a spring thats less than 7 psi, you can use a boost controller to raise that up to whatever you want. Just remember, you can never use a boost controller to go below the WG spring psi.

I would try a different supplier. I cant imagine that HKS doesnt have 7 psi springs for their 50mm wastegates. I find that very hard to believe. You should shop around some more.

The 50mm WG is considered a "Racing Wastegate", so you probably won't find a <7 psi spring, since its made for racing and no one races at that boost level. According to the HKS site, the lightest one you can get in the racing series is 10 psi.

In the standard series, you can get as low as 5.7 psi, but its only a 40mm WG. You might be able to trade the racing WGs for the Standard WGs and get the 6.4 psi spring.

If you have a tool to check spring rates, you can check the springs that are in the WGs you have. And if you can get the specs from HKS, you can compare the 2 and see how they are different.

If I remember right, a stiffer spring will give you more boost, while a weaker spring will give you less. But check on that with someone who knows for sure.
