Choosing supercharger
Choosing supercharger
I own a 2002 Supercrew with the 5.4. I'm really just looking for more towing power without killing my gas mileage.
I'm thinking about adding a supercharger. I want something that's OEM quality and won't damage my engine. I would also prefer to run 87 octane. Finally, I would rather that the sc not be too loud.
I understand that Whipple is coming out with a twin-screw soon. Anyway, what do you guys think? And what other mods should I make along with the sc?

No, you can't run a supercharger with 87 octane without some very serious risks involved. In order to get any gains from a supercharger, you have to run 91 octane. The things you want are complete opposites. If you plan on towing with a supercharger you are guaranteed to lose gas mileage. The extra power sacrifices gas mileage, and in order to get that extra power, you have to have more octane, otherwise your engine will detonate.
I doubt that Whipple will make the supercharger for the heritage body style. You probably won't see any new kits coming out for the heritage style as there are already plenty of options and a dwindling amount of the trucks. There's no money in making kits for old body styles.

YOu want somting that wont sacrifice MPG..
Once ou feel that boost, it'll be hard to stay out of it..

Once ou feel that boost, it'll be hard to stay out of it..Sure it's possible, if the Kit comes with good tuning options...turn the boost down far enough, and anything's possible.
There is only one option in my mind... The lightning SVT swap!!!
gas mileage will decrease but how much depends on your driving. A good tunner can get you a 87 octane tune but it'll be a turd compared to a 93 octane tune and usually on $.20 more a gallon.

Superchargers are great for getting more towing power. Have you made a decision on what kind you're going to get? i.e. screw type, or centrifugal. Both will get you better towing. But be carefull, twin screws will put out more low end torque than a cent. so you may want to beef up your tranny and torque converter (if it's automatic). On the other hand, I put the Procharger (centrifugal) in my 01 SCAB, 5.4 and I tow just under 9000#'s with my boat. It definately pulls harder off idle just not as hard as twin screws but IMO, you don't want to do jack rabbitt starts when pulling, you're just asking to break something. Once I get it moving, the Procharger pulls hard and keeps on going and my tranny temps. stay low. But one thing you have to get is an intercooler, that's a must. Gas milage, when I'm not pulling, it really hasn't changed except when I stand on it, that's just plain fun. Good luck with your choice.
You can't realistically run a blower with enough boost without 91+ octane. The chance of detonation would be exponential on cheap gas. Remember, you're increasing the pressure if you you're towing and detonation occurs, you're new milage will be unlimited, cause you'll be pushing or towed.
I have a powerdyne, which is quiet and efficiant. When driven like a normal SUV (like when my wife drives it not me) it gets the same milage it got before, if not a little better. But when I drive it, it sux.

Been searching as well.
I found out that the folks at Roush will give you a 3yr powertrain warranty. For my app (low end torque - towing) an EATON/roots type s/c was found to be the best solution. 2nd is the twin-screw/intercooled s/c from Whipple or Kenne Bell. Saleen is coming forth with a twinscrew for the F150 and will also offer a pwrtrain warranty in the same fashion as Roush. Both the Saleen and the Roush are Ford OEM approved (sort of). A centrifigal type s/c do not offer the same benefits as either a roots or twinscrew s/c for your request.
LOL
