Procharger or ??

I have a 2001 4x4 5.4 Screw. I tow about a 6000lb trailer, and am usually loaded up with about 1500lbs of people and stuff. After searching and doing lots of reading here, I think I want to go with a Procharger. I'm not looking for all-out power, nor am I interested in 1/4 mile times. I want something that is going to give me a nice mid-range RPM power increase. This is also a daily driver, so it has to be super reliable.

I love turbos, and have played with them on diesels, but I have not seen a good CARB legal kit for the F150 (the oil system on the STS scares me, and I'm not too thrilled about the air cleaner being under the truck on a 4x4). If someone knows of a good smog-legal turbo kit, please chime in. Otherwise, does the Procharger sound like a good choice?

Thanks!

Go Pro.

Hey it sounds like we're in a simular situation. I have a 01 F-150 4x4, 5.4, 4.10 gears, with the PS1-C Procharger at 9# of boost, no other fuel mods at this time. Straight out of the box, great performance. I'm towing around 9000 lbs. with my boat and family. So here's my experience. With the 3-core intercooler you should get the mid-range performance that you're looking for. At the low end, you'll notice some gains but not much. Hit 2nd gear, then you'll feel the boost. I notice it most on the freeway when I need to pass someone. Before the S/C, I couldn't pass anyone. It does seem to be very reliable as far as daily driving as long as you don't go boost crazy. All in all, I think the Procharger is a great choice. Good luck.

Just to give a little info on STS. I ran one on my last Silverado 5.3 for almost a year, before I traded the truck in on my SCREW. It made it through a full winter with snow, salt, and massive amounts of rain. It is now mounted on my buddies Silverado. Some people are worried about the filter being a weak link in the system, but I personally never had an issue. I was running 8psi. The oiling system worked fine, but was noisey. Overall, I would rather have an engine mounted unit, but the STS kit is still nice, I would not use it though for any offroad applications, and I did always cringe when running in the rain or through snow. But it never failed. I would love to have an ATI for this truck though.

Also, I did not know STS made a kit for the Ford. Were you looking at the universal one?

Go with the Lightning swap. OEM reliablity and years and tons of experience here. Great power and even better bang for the buck.

I agree with Brahmus....If you have higher mileage especially and will need an engine rebuild.

I love it...its all OEM parts and the power level is much better for towing
