I Want A Kenne Bell!

I HAVE AN 02 SUPERCREW 5.4 THAT I WANT TO PUT A KENNE BELL BLOWER ON. CAN ANYONE WHO HAS DONE THIS INSTALL TELL ME IF IT WAS TOO HARD OR VERY INVOLVED? I'VE DONE NUMEROUS HEAD SWAPS ON MUSTANGS BEFORE SO I AM PRETTY CONFIDENT. BUT LET'S JUST PRETEND THAT I WASN'T VERY INCLINED....IS IT EASY ENOUGH FOR ME TO DO MYSELF AND HAVE YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR KIT. DOES THE TRUCK RUN GOOD WITH IT OR AM I ABOUT TO WASTE MY MONEY? I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO BLOW UP MY TRUCK. PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU.

I did the Magnacharger, not the Kenne Bell, but I'd say that if you have done head swaps then installing a supercharger should be pretty easy.

I've heard that Kenne Bell puts out a very nice kit. I guess it's downfall is the kit doesn't include an intercooler. You could ad an air to air.

SVT-SiNiSTER,

I've got a Kenne Bell on my 2001 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 and positively enjoy the awsome power this produces in such a heavy trim truck (5400 lbs.). It took me 10 hours to do the install; following the instructions exactly will keep you within that time frame. It was relatively easy to install; the most time consuming part was replacing the plugs with Denso IT-20s (recommended by Kenne Bell). You can order the setup with 6, 8, or 10 # pulleys (only $49.00 each). The setup also comes with 36# injectors instead of the FMU. The Kenne Bell is an excellent choice. They make a high quality product. I'm still using the KB chip that came with and it's pretty good - conservative though. I used all three pulley and the 10 # pulley is awsome. I bet I could take most anything off the line including the ATI. If I had a lighter 2-wheel drive truck with a standard transmission running a KB with 10 # pulley, I could take any ATI from one end of the track to the other! I don't know where these ATI guys come off thinking the ATI is always better. Comparing apples to apples, the KB can be upgraded to out perform the ATI - just ask a Gary (a.k.a. Bones) and he'll tell you what the KB can do and do safely without internal modifications. Ask Zig what the KB has done to his 2003 SC Cobra Mustang. Jim Bell knows superchargers and he wouldn't produce something that could not compete against the other superchargers. Give Jim Bell a call and let him tell you the truth about supercharging rather than someone who hasn't been around the science and art of supercharging very long. Good luck on your KB purchase. Try contacting Bob Kennedy at kennedysdynotune.com for additional information and great pricing.

I sure hope you can take an ATI off the line.

That is total BS about you taking any ATI with the truck you described. There has already been a supercrew running 12s with the ATI. I guarentee if you take a kenne-bell, just running the out of box kit, and run it in 120 degree weather, you will barely even tell there is a supercharger on there. ATI comes with an intercooler, and they now have a 3-core intercooler.

So you can take anythng off the line but you need a 2 wheel drive and a 5 speed.

So on the track you don't need a 2 wheel drive and a 5 speed, just off the line.

A positive displacement blower and the manual transmission in these trucks will be slower than an auto off the line. I know from experiance.

Nasty - Not! I think the ATI guys ought to cool it on bashing the KB guys when they haven't a clue on how well they perform out of the box. When ever I hear of an ATI purchase, you have to include all the extras to get any performance on the low end; 42# injectors, in-tank 255 lph Boush fuel pump, a custom burned chip, and on and on it goes. I have the stock KB kit and stock KB chip running 10 # boost on a hot or cold day - yes, I installed a $300.00 homemade water/alcohol injection system to cool the air charge temp, but I really don't use that much. Cheap cooling system just ask Raycee! Even he must agree that the W/A injection system works great.

I'm telling you, this truck creates some awsome power from one end of the track to the other. I have a 5400# truck that can run side by side down the track with a 2002 Mustang Cobra in the 1/8th mile - how many car can do that let alone a 4x4 truck. I didn't purchase the truck to race until I realized how much I was missing by not supercharging. Glad I did! But when someone constantly cuts the KB SC down, I like to know exactly why. Can someone "logically" tell me why the ATI is better than the KB for MY 4x4 truck!

Thank you in advance!

I have spoke with Jim Bell and basically it's his way or the highway with supercharging. The specs and performance of the available positive displacemnet blower kits look good on paper. Part of that is their comparison to the typical 6psi non intercooled cents. Unfortuneately in the real world they don't necessarily live up to the claims do to lack of intercooling or undersized blowers.
The intercooled 9psi ATI is in a class of it's own.

I've owned both and each was installed on my current 5.4. Powerwise, If I i were choosing between the KB and a 6psi cent blower Pdyne, Vortech, etc, then it would be a KB. The included 9psi ATI pulley can actually give 11psi, without having to raise shift points. The KB, even though the gauge will climb past the pulley rating in the higher rpm, doesn't necessarily supply what the gauge reads in the uppermost rpms. The KB can perform well, but it takes more money to do so. Although I MAY not have the same off idle as my KB, I can say I am damn close. A hard launch, without powerbraking, can give me serious traction problems. Even after I lowered the rear end to help gain more traction. Also without a chip and about $50 in mods, including the filter.

I got into my ATI unexpectedly and will only buy a PD blower when they have been upgraded to compete. They make some great Mustang kits, but throw the trucks the bones. Then again there is a turbo kit in the works. I would take it over both.

Intercooling? Let me ask you this, is the twinscrew more temperature efficient than the cents? Have you ever read Corke Bell's supercharging book on the subject? Great stuff - helped my decision making process to purchase the KB. I installed a second IAT sensor in the KB manifold to measure the boosted air. The highest it got to was 122 degrees on a 85 degree day. What is your boost air temp? The ATI remember has an open under the hood air filter, how does that negatively affect the intake temps?

Crash, what is your best 60' at the track? What your best 1/8th mile time and mph? What's the weight of your truck?

I would like to see a side by side comparison with all the kits and measure all the additional cost of each upgrade that enhances the performance of the truck including a customer dynotuned chip that perfectly matches the upgrades: 90mm MAF (or larger), 42# injectors, headers, etc. - the bolt on stuff. Any takers on the $$$ it would take to perform such a challenge?

You can order a $50 12psi pulley from ATI and be done with it if one should choose.

The 90mm MAF isn't absolutely necessary, just relieving an intake restriction. The larger injectors are for tuneability and safety.

As for the cost of the tune- it depends who does it.

Allright I am confused you sound somewhat knowladgable about the supercharger but the above quote makes me wonder how much you know about cars....99 and 01 are the only years the cobra was made n/a. 00 ford did not produce the car rather the limited production cobra 'R'. 03 brought the production of the s/c 03 cobra THERE WAS NOT A COBRA IN 02! The reason being they wanted to concentrate on the upcoming 03 same for 00 They wanted to concentrate on the 'R' and fixin the problem w/ the over-rated hp issue w/ the 99 .

Thanks for all your inputs. BruceScrew, you kinda got me a little excited when you described the power your truck has with the KB.
I am leaning toward the KB. As for you cent. fans, I agree that cent. chargers make more power, especially the ATI. But what scares me about them is the top end rush of power they make. With a cent. charger all I can keep imagining is the motor puking it's guts out at around 5,500 RPM. With the KB, I know I will get a lot more bottom end torque which is what that heavy truck needs.
Also, it is my assumption that the KB would not produce as much power as a cent. in the higher RPM ranges. To me, this is good because if there is any problem with the Air Fuel ratio during high RPM with a cent. blower, I'm screwed....and more importantly so is the motor. But at high RPM with a KB, I feel that it's lack of serious top end power leaves more margin for error and that would be more forgiving on the motor. What do you think?

truck = 5000 lbs +

hp doenst move it, torque does. My vote is with the twin screw.
