What do I need to super charge?
What do I need to super charge?
I want to install a super charger on my 2001 F-150 5.4. I don't have much experience with super chargers. What do I need to make this a successful upgrade? Do I just need a super charger kit or do I also need a chip? What else would I need? What is the best kit out there for everyday use? I'm looking to get a little more umph for my 5.4 so it can move the heavy 4x4 a little quicker. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I GOT WHAT YOU NEED
IF YOU WANT I CAN GET YOU ALL YOU NEED I HAVE ONE FOR A 2000 LIGHTNING, FROM EXHAUST TO INJECTORS AND CHIPS AND AN E.O. NUMBER DON@VISUALPETS.COM FOR DETAILS
You can go with a bunch of different SC's that are in kit form, with all the parts you need. I have a Powerdyne SC, which came complete with everything you need to do the install. No chips or replacement injectors or anything was necessary. There are several other very good manufactorers that have 'complete' kits, it just depends on what type you want based on what you are going to do with your truck. I thought the Powerdyne was very simple to install. It probably took me 5 to 6 hours to do it but I was in no hurry, had a few beers, BS'd with the nosy neighbor, etc.... You could even spread the installation out over a few days or evenings while driving it in between. It's not a "once you start you are committed to finishing it" kind of thing. The only specialty tools you need is a crank pully removal/installation tool set and a set of fuel line/transmission line removers. I spent about $25 for both. The rest of the installation just uses regular hand tools and a drill and set of drill bits to mount the new air box and the fuel regulator. A fan removal tool set would probably help but I have electric fans so I didn't have to deal with that when I installed mine. No permanent modifications are done to the engine or anything else and you could even disable it whenever you wanted or needed to.
Do check out the other threads too. There is a lot of good discussion on what type of SC is good for what, ease/complexity of the installation, different feedback on how satisfied people are with their SC, etc... The Powerdyne is probably the easiest to install out of all the options and I'm very satisfied with it. It was the biggest punch for the dollar by far. Gave me a bunch more power but it's not a "smoke the tires" kind of thing. If you want to do that there are other SC options that would probably work better. Check out the other threads.
Good luck.
