Crash! Tell me about your tranny.
Crash! I see you have the 5 speed 4.6. I have the same setup and will be putting on a vortech charger next week. Tell me what you have done, if anything, to keep the 5 speed from going to crap.

I'd like to know too. The only thing I can think of is to rip this POS tranny out and put a good one in there.
So far mine has been holding up pretty good. I've got almost 10k on the supercharger (39k on the truck). The biggest problem I have is when I get the rpms up in first gear I get a crunch when I shift to second. Sometimes I think it's because my foot can't keep up whith what I'm doing. Lately I'm thinking that the syncros just can't keep up.
It's cold here in MA now so this transmission is showing many of it's faults. I drive slow untill it warms up so that I don't have to hear (and feel) all that clunking and crunching on the upshifts.
I feel that this manual transmission is a disadvantage at the drag strip but on the streets it can be an advantage. Not only can we hold the gear longer to be set up better for the next, we can also slow down quicker which can be a real good thing on the streets.
It might be a different story on the 4X4's.

I'd be surprised that a stock tranny couldn't take 400 ft/lb of torque. Now, this isn't a ford, but on my 74 Chevy Nova the stock TH-350 stood up to 450 ft/lb. When I did some work and upped my power to 500 hp/570 ft/lb torque the 150,000 mile tranny finally needed a rebuild. Put in a stouter tranny at that point.
Then again, this is on a 25+ year old vehicle, they probably don't overbuild as much anymore, too expensive.

Got a great deal on it. Was thinking of going procharger but happened upon this. Glad to hear the 5 speed is holding up.
And Wittom, its your shifting fork that crunches. Had mine replaced under extended warranty

If you play with it at all you will be replacing the rear differential. These 8.8s don't stand up to much abuse on the 4x4s. As for the tranny holding up on a 4x4??? If you get stuck and use 4x4 with the power your blower wil be putting to the wheels the first thing you will smell will be the clutch. Centerforce has a Duel Friction for the 5 speeds. I am on my Second clutch and 4th and hopefully last rear end.
