Hunting for '02 2wd performance suspension
Hunting for '02 2wd performance suspension
I hope I'm not breaking any ruled here. I posted this in the suspension section and then realized this may have been a better place. I f amod sees it and doesn't like it I'm sure they can delete the first thread. My appologies if I am out of line. So, here is what I have going on (copied from first thread):
INITIAL POST:
Ok, so I've gone back and forth several times on what to do with this truck. I've finally made up my mind. A little history on the truck:
2002 F150 Supercab 6ft bed 2wd
7700 B+ package
XL base
It was my work truck / daily driver / tow rig
I bought it new with 25 miles on it, it now has 200,000.
Has been a great truck! Have replaced alternator, and two ignition coils.
Everything else has been normal wear items and maintenance items.
It has custom dual exhaust with no mufflers, a trailer brake controller, and a aftermarket CD player. Otherwise it is bone stock.
I don't really need the truck anymore. I bought a 3500 Dodge for towing / work truck and have a Jeep TJ for 4x4 playing and a stock Jeep JKU for daily driving dutys.
I've decided the F150 would make a good sport truck build. I want to start with suspension and asthetics. The truck is already pretty darn fast and I can make it faster later.
I want to hear from some people wih some experience on performance suspension mods on these trucks. I have actually never done a 2wd full size sport truck. I have done imports, muscle cars, 4x4s, mini-trucks, and pre-runners, but this is a first.
I want to both give it a more agressive lowered stance and improve the handling. I want as good of a "road course racing" style suspension as is reasonable and still drive it on the street.
What have you guys used and what is your feedback on it? I don't mind spending some money, the truck has long since been paid off and I have gotten the good out of the $20,000 I paid for it. I'm ready to play!
Thanks for your input!
FOLLOW UP:
I was just looking at RideTech's web site. They don't have an entire stage 3 kit for my truck. But, that's ok because i could probably save some money fabbing up my own brackets and links in the rear anyway. I think I would prefer using Currie Johnny Joints for the link ends anyway.
Does anyone on here use any of the RT stuff?
Just curious how the actual cornering performance would be as well as the ride (I would rather compromise some ride quality for performance anyway). i would think with a full high quality air suspension and HD four link I could still tow just as musch weight as stock until i start modding the engine and transmission if I wanted to. But, I don't know why I would...

You might look into the Hotchkis Total Vehicle System. It includes springs leafs and swaybars. I have it on my Lightning and am completely satisfied with it.
It looks like you will have to piece the kit together. For some reason the TVS isn't listed on the on the extended cab page. The springs will definitely work but I'm not sure if the leafs are a different size on extended cabs but I can't imagine they are. Maybe someone else will shed light on this.
here is a review on the TVS
here are the swaybars for your truck if it gets lowered
there is a lot of good info on race prepping your truck on this site: Tim Skelton
my setup includes the Hotchkis TVS which drops the truck 2" in the front and 3" in the rear. In addition to that I have Beltech 2" drop spindles up front and Eibach 2" drop hangars in the rear.

edit: not sure why it shows the video twice

ive got the beltech 3/4 lowering kit w/ upgraded shocks. hellwig sways front and rear, and traction bars. traction bars was one of the best upgrades i've done. eliminates axle wrap
Is that a body kit on your truck? Who makes it?
The only wheels I can find for my truck are 20x9 with 6.18 backspacing. That seems like a lot of back spacing, but I've been playing with Jeeps. Are they going to work? (stupid 7x150 bolt pattern!)
ouch. didn't know you had the 7 lug. best advice i can give you is get a bolt adapter kit. i THINK they make them for a 7 lug f150, but i have no idea. you were lucky enough (or cursed) to have the heavier duty f150.
7 lugs and 5 lugs from our years are very hard to find wheels, because they don't make them anymore. i have seen several kits that change the 5x135mm to a 5x4.5 (common jeep)
i'm running 20's with a 275/45r20. i've got 2 sets of 20's, both missing center caps that are no longer made

I am running stock lightning rims 18x10 wrapped in 295/45/18 hankook RH06's. DG Motorsports makes it for the GT F150. ask for Dave 760 433 7413. If you want side exit exhaust the kit is different like mine. 20x9 would be good with a 4.5 inch backspacing. I would get wheel adapters and expand your options for wheels.
I have the TVS on my Lightning as well
no complaints here either...

I have stock Lightning springs with upgraded sway bars (Belltech's) on my green truck and now I want a TVS for it

needs air bags though

Honestly it would be easier to sell the truck as a unmodified 7700 and pick up a standard F150 for the mods.
All 97-03 F150s share the same length leaf springs, they do offer different spring rate combos depending on cab/bed and engine combinations
