does 6" out back require notching?
edit: found this:
97-03 Ford F-150 4"/6" Economy Drop Kits:
Ford's new F-150 is the hottest selling Ford product since
the original Mustang, and we've got the hottest selling kit to
go with it, the massive 4"/6" drop. This kit uses Western's
2" front H.D. Super A-arms combined with 2" Smooth-Rider
coils (not pictured). In the rear, a 5" axle flip kit and frame
c-section is used with a 1" shackle to deliver the 6" drop.
This one's a real head-turner! A deluxe drop is also available
which includes a 1800 lb. SlamAir Kit for trailer towing and
heavy hauling. Soon to be featured in a Sport Truck magazine

if thats true, i would stick with a 2/4 or a 3/5 to save money.

yes. 6" will be axle on the frame with no bump stops so you will want a notch, or it will ride like a covered wagon.
with the 285-50-20 you probably can only go 2/4 without rubbing like crazy.
I had 3/5 on stock 255-70-16 and it rubbed at full lock. Then i went to 255-65-16 and it just barely rubbed at full steering lock. Later i bought 20s with +6mm offset and a 275-40-20 and no rubbing on the 3/5 drop.
I was planning on doing a 4/6 before the wreck. I plan on doing a 4/6 on my new red screw. To pull off a 4/6 with those big of tires you will definitely need to roll the fender lips in the front. I will get mine done just for piece of mind.
biggest problem is your tire size. harley davidson supercrews come with a 275-45-20, and alot of the owners switch to a 295-45-20. Just for comparison purposes, your tires are larger then the harleys and much larger then my 20s

True, my 2002 F150 had a 5" flip kit, 2" shackles, 1" block on stock shocks and stock frame.

flip kit you shouldnt need to do the pinion angle shims
harleys come with drop coils and leafs, for around 1.5" front and 2" rear
as for shocks you can probably get away with a 2 or 3" drop shock up front and rear, just be sure to get shock extenders for the rear unless you get a 5 or 6" drop shock for the rear. Ive had very very good luck with the bilsteins (factory lightning equipment)

2/4 would look way better.
With my 4.5" flip kit in the back I'm sitting like 2" away from the frame not including the bump stops. There's basically no travel and I bottom out sometimes even with like 30PSI in the rear airbags.
