Sub box question?
Sub box question?
I've been looking around for quite a while for a sub box that fits a 99 SCab. All that I found was the stealth box and a q-logic box. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a box that fits underneath the bench seat?
You can try making your own. I made one, downward firing, for an 8" Polk sub, can't remember all the dimensions. It's not hard. There is not a lot of room down there, though, and the space is slightly higher at the front than the back.
Used 1/2" MDF, lots of glue, screws and bracing. I think it was about 0.42 cubic feet on the inside, which was acceptable for my small sub. I have my sub under the left rear, and the amp and CD changer under the center and right rear seats.
Used fiber fill in the small box. Box is slightly irregular in shape in an attempt to maximize volume. I cut a floor mat so it looks carpeted on the exposed front. Took a little bit of time and planning but it was cheap and didn't have to wait weeks for delivery. You can find information on how to build a box at many places on the web.
For most 10" or larger subs, you will probably want to lift the seat which will give you more room.

I did the same thing as dirt bike dave (I may have even plagarized his plans lol). I have an 8" RF in a home made box out of 3/4" MDF. The box design can support up to a 10" sub, provided the volume works. I think it cost me total around $50 for the box and sub.
The box design "fits around" the seat and support in my Y2k.
Not sure bout your 99, but mine the rear seat bottom folds up, so this had to be taken into account for total volume.
Make sure you get a sub that can perform in the volume you are designing and that you "like" MDF dust

I installed a MTX Thunderform in my 98 xcab and love it. I have a "loaded" and self amped one. I used the existing head unit. It was an easy install and fit very well under the rear seat. It has 2 8" MTX speakers in it and has a built in 100W amp.
I have a floor mounted 4WD shift lever so it was not possible to mount the center console style under the ashtray.
The only drawback is the passenger rear seat does not fold out.
You get surprisingly good sound and very good bass out of this unit, with very little mods to the truck.

Install
Hogrules,
Install was very easy, just find the speaker wires under the door sills and tap into them. Then run them to the speaker unit, to the input terminals. Then run a power wire from the battery/12vdc, a ground wire, and a keyed ignition wire to turn on the amp. This is for the amped version, the un amped version is just about the same except you hook the amp up according to the directions, then run the speaker out puts from the amp to the speaker.
It depends on what speakers you want to run, and if you want to run a different amp on what you get but I found mine to be a very good unit.

Two thumbs up. I put 2 Rockford 10" under my 97 rear seat and the fit and sound is great. Well worth the $$$$. It just was not worth my time and effort to build my own. He has already done the work and is not charging that much. Plus I got mine in under 6 dayz.
