Totally Disapointed!
Hi all,
Here's the deal: I used to have 2 Pioneer 12's ran by a Pioneer amp behind my seat. The box that housed them was BIG! Anyways, the system sounded pretty damn good, it hit hard and hit low. Unfortunatley, my truck was broken into and my whole stereo was ripped off. A couple weeks ago I decided it was time to get a new one. Based on research and a recommendation from my stereo shop (who does very good work) I went with 2 JL 10W3's powered by a 500w JL monoblock. Expecting big things, especially going from Pioneer subs to JL's, I am extremely disappointed! They don't sound nearly as good as my pioneers, are not that loud, and don't hit down low at ALL! I've taken it back twice to have them tweak it to get it to sound better, but I am still far from satisfied. I have the subs cranked up to +6 on my headunit(which is max) and the amp turned up quite a bit. Now, they shops says they can add rings to the sub box to give it more space and add some kind of stuffing that is supposed to make it sound better. I need help! Should I let them mod it somemore or scrap the box and go with something else? Please offer any suggestions or experiences! Thanks in advance!

You have good equipment, it sounds like the box is the problem. The stereo shop's recommendation is to add rings and polyfill to create more airspace. I would scrap the box and build a new one to the specs of the subs. If that isn't an option you can add polyfill (pillow stuffing from walmart) and it will simulate a bigger box.

I have to agree with RWillieK on this matter. by the way what kind of box is it? how thick? in theory my system should pound too, but my box is a MTX Thunderform box, its plastic, it is nice but it cant handle the bass.
