Polk/MOMO wattage ?

I need your help guy's. I have decided to get a 10" Polk/MOMO sub in a sealed inclosure. And it recommends at least 500 watts RMS. Will a mono amp with 300 watts RMS drive it efficiently? I'm lacking in money right now, and was just wondering if 300 watts is enough???

Also... I found an MTX Thunderform sub box with two 10" MTX 6000 subs and a built in 100 watt amp. For $550. Is this a good price? If anyone has a Thunderform system, tell me about it. I'm very seriouly considering buying one. Does it have good bass? Is the bass clean at high volume levels with no distortion? My system as of now is a Kenwood HU, and Infinity 5752cf 5x7's in the doors without an amp. Do you think the Thunderform would overpower my speakers up front? Or should it be ok? Thanks for any help.

IMO you will be wasting your money with the Thunderform setup, you can do much better for $550.

The Polk Momo will still sound good with 300 watts (as long as your amp is 300 watts RMS not peak power). However, if you want your sub to perform to its potential you will have to feed it more power.

I heard from my electronics teacher that your supposed to feed a speaker at least one-half to three-quarters the required rms wattage to make the speaker sound good. He said any more than that, and the speaker will distort an all you get is bad sound. Is there any truth to his theory?

Your electronics teacher doesn't know what he is talking about. If his theory is true then why wouldn't the speaker company rate their products for lower wattage? Ask him what causes distortion and see what he has to say. The only way to eliminate distortion is to have your amp setup correctly. Most people think that the gain is the volume. If you turn the gain all the way up on an amp you will get bad distortion, but if you have it setup correctly it will sound nice.

He problably does'nt know much about car audio. My amp choices are: 1. Profile California Series mono amp rated at 300 watts x 1 RMS/ 410 watts peak. 2. US acoustics USX2150 rated at 150 watts RMS x 2 or 450 watts x 1 RMS. The peak on the US acoustics amp is 225 x 2 at 2ohms/ don't know the mono peak watts. If the Profile CS 300 won't push the Polk/MOMO 10", I'll definatley get the US acoustic amp and bridge it to 450 watts mono. These are the only two amps that I can afford right now. Which one should I get?

Are you getting the recalled polk momo subs, or the new ones that are coming out. The new ones for this year were recalled.

Out of the amps you mentioned the US Acoustics would be my first choice. How much do you have to spend on an amp?

If your sub has dual voice coils (DVC) then I would recommend:

JBL 600.1 (you can get it at www.ikesound.com for $205)
300x1 at 4 ohms
600x1 at 2 ohms

If you sub has a single voice coil (SVC) and/or you plan on adding another sub in the future I would spend the extra $$$ and buy

JBL 1200.1 (you can get it at www.ikesound.com for $285)
600x1 at 4 ohms
1200x1 at 2 ohms

Also, www.ikesound.com has free shipping on all their products!

If you want to stay with US Acoustics you can get the

USX800D (you can get it at www.thezeb.com for $239)
600x1 at 2 ohms

Happy shopping!
