speaker distortion solution...???
Hey all.....
I replaced my head unit in my SCREW with an aftermarket one.
I have 4 sets of Boston Acoustics RC820 in the 4 doors --- these are component speakers....I have a 300/4 channel JL audio amp powering them.....
Okay....... When I turn the volume way up on the radio....the speakers will eventually start to distort after it gets REally loud.....
My questions is this.....Would a more powerful amp keep the speakers from distorting so soon? Say If I get a 300/2 amp for the 2 front components and a 300/2 for the rear components.....That would be 150 watts per channel instead of 75 watts like now....Or is this just throwing money away because it is the speakers?

I would say no less power turn the gain down on your amp if you still get distortion check all your wiring more power will mostlikely distort the sound even more or blow your speakers.

I'm with Ascii on this one. Check your connections first. They've gotta be clean and tight. Then check your amp gain. There is a tremendous temptation to crank the gain way up, thinking you're really gonna get a great sound and volume level, especially with upgrade speakers. Don't do it. Cut it waaaaay back, almost "off". Then set your HU perfectly flat and at a reasonable volume level, listening to a CD you're very familiar with. THEN go back and start raising the gain on the amp. Listen critically to how clean the sound is and you try various settings. You'll find your perfect level soon enough.
When you first get and amp you generally fine tune it alot for like the first 2 weeks till you find the "perfect" setting and JL amps kick @$$ (IMHO) and they are underrated at the wattage they will push out so first set your hu to its best then fine tune tweek the jl with its built in gadgets and gain super low ;] again my 2¢
