Speaker Size

Hey, I was just wondering if you guys could tell me if I could put 6x9 inch speakers in my 1998 F-150 Ext. Cab and how much work would be involved. Thanks.

I am sure it could be done, but just FYI the stock speaker size is 6X8 and there are plenty of good choices in the stock size!

Ford lists stock size as 6X8............aftermarkets are 5x7.....they are thes same damn size, anyhow.......I would opt for some high quality 5x7s, you will need to cut metal to make a 6x9 fit and you will also have a tough time finding 6x9s that fit depth wise in the doors, most 6x9s have monsterous magnets, and you'll have to build out the door panel.....WORK WORK WORK........buy a 5x7 or a nice component set, and a sub for the low end and you'll be fine.

Well yeah the 5X7 and 6X8 are the same size, but my aftermarket Pioneer 3-ways still said 6X8 on the box and not 5X7...BUT yeah they are the same size

6x9s would be a great upgrade, if you can do it I would, that is what I am about to do, putting cadence US 6x9 speakers in my 88 F-150 doors, the stock holes fit 6.5s.

There are 2 ways to fit 6x9s into smaller speaker holes

1. If the magnet of the 6x9 can fit into the stock hole, then just make a thick spacer out of MDF to fit in betwee the door and the speaker, so then you don't have to do any metal cutting.

2. Cut the metal out so the speaker fits.

Hope I helped.

Hey HuskerF150: Looks like you have the sister-truck to my F150... check out my pic!

You can probably fit 6x9's easily with metal cutting in the rear S/C section but finding 6x9's with small enough magnets to clear the door's window glass will be problematic. As suggested, an MDF shim would work if there is enough room between the door metal and the plastic door cover.

Better to use 6.5inch 2way component set and mount tweeters in the door pods or custom mounted in the dash.
