Kenwood or MBQuart

I've got a dilemna - I have been shopping for component speakers for the front doors. Here is what I have narrowed it down to - MBQuart DSD213 or Kenwood Excelen KFC-XR50P. I can get either one for $179.00. Specs are pretty much the same, MBQ's are near bottom of their line and the KW's are near the top of their line.

Would like to get some opinions on which would be better. I am leaning towards the Kenwoods because the tweeter is medium grey which would match the soft area around the door handle and also it has a swivel flush mount, whereas the MBQ has a fixed angle mount (in black).

Please give me some opinions (quality, sound quality, etc.)

Thanks guys!!!

Can you give them a listen before you buy them? If yoou can, I would let that be the deciding factor...

Yes for the KW's, but the MBQ's are online and I don't know of a local dealer that carries them.

I just installed a pair of MB Quart PSD 216 (6.5" premuim components). The sound is just incredible. They are connected to a Pioneer DEH-7400MP HU and are the clearest, best sounding speakers I have ever owned!!!!
I got them from onlinecarstereo.com, here is the link to the MB models and prices they carry.

I highly recommend them. The 6.5" fit easily in the front doors. All you need is an adapter plate. I will be posting a longer message within a day or so explaining how mine were installed and the pictures.

Slapshot - thanks for the input. Where did you get the adaptor plate for the 6.5's?? I heard the 5.25's would go in without any cutting, but I did not think 6.5's would. If so, then I need to look at those instead. Please let me know.

I went to the website - they are $10 cheaper than my usual place I buy from. Thanks for the reference.

You're going to let a buying decision come down to whether the tweet matches your interior? You're joking, right? Are you seriously saying that styling color is more important to you than how a speaker set would perform and sound?
Hello? Hell-o!! Hell-ooooooo??!!!!

The place I had install them just made the plates from thin wood. use the template that comes with the speakers, then just screw it into the speaker opening on the door. They used the factory speaker to make an adapter, then cut the template to cut an opening on the inside of the adapter.
I will have pics up on Wed or Thurs of this week, I just need enough free time to go thru them. I took pix as they did it to help everyone out on here. Overall, it wasn't all that hard.

Sundog - maybe I did not state myself clearly, from the specs I have read the speakers seem to be equivalent, not to mention the price. I was just trying to get some opinions to sway me one way or the other since I am unable to hear the MBQ's. I was just saying that if it still seems that these two are still pretty comparable after getting some input, then I will probably go with KW's because I like the way the tweeters pivot and yes they do match the interior better.

Excuse me for trying to make it look custom and not just slapped together!!!

Thumbs up Hey LightningCrew....

Let me know if you get the MB Quarts. That way I can meet you somewhere and I can hear them before I buy!

They have a new Harley truck, the silver one, at Covington Ford if you get down this way. I'm probably going to try to stop and check it out one day this week.

I actually work in Covington, but won't be there until Friday, so if they still have the HD, I will check it out then. Maybe one day we can meet up after work there in town. I would love to see your sub box!!!

Unhappy

Better give me a couple of weeks on the sub box. I had a problem with one of the CDTs and had to send it back. Hopefully they will send me one out this week.

Shoot me an email some time and we'll grab some lunch.

Thumbs up

The MB Quarts are one of the best speakers available in my opinion. All other speakers i've had distort at high volumes, and thats with an amp running them. If you think the MBQ's sound good hooked up to a head unit, try a really nice amp...they scream! I have never once have heard these things produce distortion.
I have the the Premium series but you could always spring for the Q series which will run you about $1000 for the 6 1/2 components

Definitely go with the MB Quarts. Excellent speakers IMO. Their highs are pretty harsh, but if you have good bass to balance it out, it'll sound really good.

I'd never buy Kenwood's. I don't think they're a very good quality.

Plus, MB's have a 3 year warranty on them. My cousin had his car decked out with MB and he blew one of them and he sent it back to MB and they fixed it for no charge.

No disrespect to Kenwood, but I don't feel that they've ever been in the same class as MB Quart. Apples and Oranges, IMO.
