Upgrading speakers but not the head unit
Upgrading speakers but not the head unit
I have a 2014 STX SuperCab with the basic stereo in it (Sticker said 4-speaker system but I have 4 door speakers and the pillar tweeters) and basic Sync. I really like the Sync and the steering wheel controls and don't want to lose them. I want to upgrade my factory speakers though and had thought of adding a Fox Box to get a little better bass.
I am not really looking to add window shattering sound or doing a full blown system. I just want to get better sound. I still want to use the pillar speakers too if possible.
My question is, will upgrading the speakers to say Polk audio and maybe the fox box garner better sound or just a perception of better sound? I know they will handle more power and my past experience with just upgrading speakers made the sound worse because it really needed a better amp. But, it has been a very long time since I have built a system and it seems everything has changed. Recommendations?

Almost any decent replacement speaker will sound better than stock (if not over/under-driven). However - yer best single bang/buck will be adding a decent sub.
Hence - invest in a good sub and a good future-ready, multichannel, curve-compensating LOC - (Audiocontrol), and leave the other speakers alone (for now, at least).
( BTW - if you insist upon speakers anyway, hear-tell Alpine is havin' a sale).
I am not familiar with a LOC so I will search it out. I typically do the head unit, an amp and the speakers. But, I know with times and technology changing I am behind the times. I read I have to add a line out for the sub too so I am reading up on that as well.
I don't want to add too much visually because of how easy these things are to get into.

I put the Kicker complete audio upgrade in mine. It is by no means a competition audio system, but the change from the stock door speakers is night and day. Picked one up on Amazon for $499. Ford part # is DL3Z-18808-B for a supercab with 4.2" or 8" display.
Here's one currently on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/13-14-F-150-Genuine-Ford-Kicker-Complete-Audio-System-Upgrade-Kit-SUPER-CAB-/161501571224?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AF-150&hash=item259a3e6898&vxp=mtr

Meh.
The problem with that is, there is no future-ready upgrade-ability. To go to the next level, you'll need to rip it all out and start over.
I'd invest that into a much better sub, sub amp & LOC. Remember - the sub alone will improve the sound from the existing door speakers, as you can now offload the lows from the doors, saving them from the having to do that chore (which they do marginally)- and letting them produce midrange & highs with far less stress and distortion. It also lessens the power demands on the existing OEM amp - further preserving fidelity. Most of the load is in the low frequencies.
IMHO - no offense.

PS - yes - you can upgrade the screen - but why? Better off putting that money into vastly superior aftermarket gear.
As posted - several threads on those kinds of upgrades. In short - build the system over time - instead of buying a dead-end, just-adequate boxed system that you'll get tired of and will eventually replace.
Millennials have ZERO patience, though

Well that changes everything. I don’t have to have Sync. I do like my hands free though. I will have to research that. I could do that one piece at a time and add to it. As long as it isn’t too flashy. I could add a rear view camera then.
Meh.
