Upgrades for a 09 scab

Hello all, I have been reading through all the upgrades that people have done to their sound systems. WOW! The problem I am having is trying to determine which way I want to go. I am helping a friend upgrade his system. He wants better sound quality than the stock speakers give. We will be keeping the stock head unit. (09 fx4 not sony with sync) We have a budget of about $1000. Would it be better to amplify the door speakers or will just a simple replacement be ok? He is not looking to keep up with the local teenagers but would like a way better sound than he currently has. Install and wiring is not a problem. I have just been out of the stereo scene for too long. I'm looking for a little advise. Thanks, Mike

With a budget like that definitely sound deaden the doors, put in a set of nice components, and definitely amplify them. Possibly even a 8" or 10" sealed sub under the rear seat to add some low end response too.
