Need help with ported enclosure........

First off I want to say thank you to everyone on this forum. I am a noob when it comes to car audio, although I have learned a lot in the last year. Anytime I post a question I usually get really good advice from everyone. Recently I began to look at ported enclosures and came across this particular enclosure.

I am wanting to pair it with this subwoofer, which I already have in my posession.

Basically what I am asking is would that enclosure work well with the specs JL Audio has outlined in the above link for maximum results in a ported enclosure. The air space of the enclosure is almost an exact match of what JL Audio calls for, but as far as the port dimensions I have no clue about that and the dimensions are not the same.

I guess it would help if you knew exactly what subwoofer I had. It is a JL Audio 10w3v3-2 being ran at 400 watts RMS. Any help would be much appreciated. I am just wondering if I can get more out of this subwoofer housing it in a ported enclosure.

Without the port dimensions of the box it's hard to say.

I am curious, if this is going into your truck, where do you plan on putting it?

I figured someone would ask that eventually I was going to flip up the bottom of the rear passenger seat and put it there. The fit will be tight, but it should barely squeeze in there. I rarely have people that ride in the back and if they do they can sit on the bigger bench behind the driver seat. Is there anyway to figure out the port dimensions based on the actual dimensions of the box?

I am not real good with figuring out ported enclosures.

From what I can tell JL recommends 1.388 ft^3 internal volume.
The box you linked is 1.33315 ft^3 which is really close.

The height and width of the port slot look pretty close to JL specs.

Can't really tell from the port length from the picture. From looking the back divider may go further across the back than what JL would require. This would tune the box lower than you might want.

$50 with shipping is still pretty cheap. Might be worth the gamble. Will cost you $30 in just a 4x8 sheet of MDF to make your own.

Thanks Langlowe! I might take the gamble or might also see what this guy online quotes me at for a custom enclosure. www.davetheboxguy.com

The 1SV10 is more like 1.0ft^3 after port and subwoofer displacement. The port length is approx 14" deep and 8" across. This will work for the 10w3 but it is not what JL "recommends". It would have decent ouput but I think you'll find it's a bit small for adequate frequency range, specifically in the lower end. There are several people who build custom enclosures that would give you the recommended volume for this sub. I'd definitely go that route. Typically built enclosures for a single sub are around $100+

Yes, you will absolutely "get more out of it" by running it in a ported enclosure (up to +3db more) and often times 1 ported sub in a proper enclosure will have more output than 2 of the same sub in a sealed system. So you'll really hear an improvement in output from that single sealed Foxbox.. Also are you running a 10w3 dual 2ohm version or dual 4ohm version? IMO if you're going to give up a back seat to stash this back there, I'd do it right and have an enclosure built for it.

7lug it is the newer W3 that is a single 2 ohm rated at 500 watts RMS. So if the enclosure is not exact an exact match to the subwoofer will it sound bad or just not as good as it would in the recommended dimensions that JL specifies? Thank you by the way for sharing some of your knowledge.

I would definitely give it a shot myself, but unfortunately I am in an apartment right now, so I am lacking the space and all the tools to do the job. I have went to a few shops in town and they all tell me that they builder only does sealed enclosures. I have not been able to find very many resources online that build custom enclosures, but that one I listed above.

Well I guess the prefab box from Sonic Electronix isn't going to work. I emailed them out of curousity to see what their boxes are tuned to generally. The guy said 40 hertz for most of their enclosures and JL calls for 32 hertz.

Yeah, a 40hz tuned box in a truck that resonates at 40hz might be good for spl burps but wouldn't be very nice for music.

That's what I was talkin about. Smaller enclosure sacrifice low frequency extension. Have u talked to that guy u linked Davetheboxguy?
