Sub help

Guys, I'd like to get this deal BB has. They have Buy one get one Free on their Kicker subs. I can get a Kicker 10C104 for $89.99 plus get one free...so that's TWO 10s for $90!! And consider Sonic has them for $119.99 each...I'd say its a pretty good deal from an authorized dealer.

BUT

I don't think they will fit the Supercrew boxes due to mounting depth. Am I correct? Will I have to get Shallow mount subs for those supercrew boxes??
Please help---DirtySCREW

..well I just learned that MOST of you think Kicker's are crap! And this is the info I NEED to know. Again, I've been out of the car audio seen for 12+years!!!

Whats subs would you recommend for the supercrew 2 10"s boxes?? I know that the mounting depth is what I'm gonna have a problem with. I know shallow mount subs would work, but don't know if I can fit a regular sub of some brand in there.---DirtySCREW

I am also in the same boat as you Dirty, I also have purchased everything but the subs and box. I have used Kickers in the past (Comp CRV) and they have worked fine for my needs. What box did you get Dirty?

I just went with some Pioneer shallow mounts. They aren't insanely loud or high-end quality, but I've got them on a good sub amp and they sound decent. The JL shallow mounts came out a little later, and if I were in the market I probably would've gotten those.

I have a single Image Dynamics ID10D4 and it is really nice. Two would be almost overkill for me. As it stands right now, with just the one, I can feel it and it rattles the change in my console. When I am feeling frisky the rear view mirror becomes unusable.

Plus it fits the SuperCrews box perfectly after you "remove" the magnet cover. More like break and rip but it does some off.

I have also read where people really like the 12 inch shallow mount MKIII. Kinda hard to find though and they command a pretty penny.

MAx---I don't have anything yet. I'm researching/shopping. There are like 3-4 supercrew boxes out there from different manufactuers and each has a diferrent configuration for how the subs are laid out. I have an old Alpine Amp from the 90s that has just sat in my closet for all these years. I only used it for about 1-1.5 years...it still LOOKS brand new!!! It is only 25 watts X4 RMS though...and I dunno if that will be enough for my doors. Yes, I want to replace the crappy factory speakers with something. Are ya'll replacing just with some quality 6x8s OR are ya'll putting in components and the like??? I was thinking of maybe some Alpine or RF 6x8s since my budget is low!!!!

As far as subs, I've been thinking about either some JLs or some Memphis. I've read good things about Memphis' shallow mount subs, and I think that one of their regular subs will fit. I just want 2 10s. Enough to be felt and heard.
Back in the day I had 2 RF Punch 12's with a RF Punch 60 running it and she slammed!!!! If memory serves me correct, I think that Punch 60 is like 360 watts Bridged. I played bass cd's no problem!

Keep the ideas coming guys and we'll help each other---DirtySCREW

I would absolutely use that old 4 channel. Today's mainstream amplifiers are chinese built garbage using low quality parts, extremely overrated. They might say 1000 watts on the box but thats to get you to buy it. I use USA built amps from the 90s in my SQ setup and they sound far better and provide more power than anything mainstream Ive used/heard (unless you are looking at expensive stuff like Zapco, Audison, DLS etc).

For speakers, I'd get a 6.5" components set and bridge the 4 channel to them in the front doors or kick panels. If you absolutely need rear speakers, run it off the head unit faded back.

For subwoofers, if you can fit one with 5" depth look at the Dayton HO10. Nice budget woofer that plays well in small sealed enclosure and is built with better materials than the mainstream stuff. Also the IDQ 10 is a well designed 10 if you can fit it. If you have to go shallow, maybe the new Type R shallow 10? Pricey though.

The industry has taken quite a turn since you were last in the game. Companies are aiming at the crowd of kids that want subs for some bass, quality control has gone out the window. If you want quality stuff without spending thousands you need to look beyond the typical car audio store or supersite like sonic.

Thanks mSaLL150! My Alpine amp is a MRV-F250 4 channel.....and again I think it is 25 watts x4 RMS or 100 X 2 bridged. It's kinda funny as I've never heard of the subs you listed..but will definitely check them out. I read for a couple hours yesterday and I think it was you that has a BM MkIII sub(never heard of them but I googled!)? I was reading your box build thread and how you were gonna bed line it due to your outdoor/hunting activities. I don't want to break the bank, and I know sound is so subjective. What sounds good to me might not sound good to you and vice versa. I just want a nice system that I can rock out to when I want to and also get that thump back. Man i remember the back massages from those Bass cd's! LOL What do you recommend for a sub amp? If money wasn't an issue, I'd probably get a JL 500/1 for subs and 300/4 for doors. I have always heard that they were a good combo. A friend of mine swears by Soundstream. Granted, he has his old soundstream stuff and says the newer stuff isn't as good either. Any help is appreciated---DirtySCREW

mSallo150---also I would like to add I'm not going to be entering any competitions or anything. This is just a system for me to jam to. And I'd like it to sound as good as possible. .....But confirming that the Kicker Subs are crap??---DirtySCREW

I was thinking of getting 1 or 2 Alpine Type S. Seem to be priced right and not really a shallow mount but not as deep as a regular sub. I think they are 4.5" deep.

the type S are only 4.3" deep which is .8" more than RF p3 shallow and they both handle about the same amount of power and the type S are 40 dollars cheaper than the RF on sonic. i would go with the type S they seem to be good and there wasn't any bad reviews on it. if you go with one sub get the 2 ohm but if you go with 2 subs get the 4 ohm. hope this helps ya

I am running the standard JL10W3V3/Fox Box setup with an old school RF BD501 and it was really shocking at first. I couldn't believe (for a sealed enclosure) how much bass two 10s were putting out. Apparently it was too much as my Fox Box enclosure is coming apart at the seams. I can't recommend this enclosure to any one at this point.

I am now trying to figure out what I'm going to do to remedy my situation. I emailed Fox but he never responded so I'm thinking I will re-enforce the box because I like the design. Build quality just wasn't up to par. it didn't hold up for more than 45 days. And its not like I pound it constantly. Just like to cure my munchies for bass every once in a while.

Thanks for the insight. I was looking at the shallows but from what i was reading people were regretting getting them because they don't hit as hard. At this point in my life I am not doing competitions and I don't care if anyone can hear my music outside of my truck, and of course with todays economy I am not looking to break the bank. I am just over $400 into my system because a friend hooked me up with a great discount on Infinity equipment.

tks f150initally. Do you know if anyone has posted a box build for the 2003 bodystyles. I'm sure there are differences between the old bodystyle like I have and the newer ones. I was thinking of buying a supercrew box, but the more I think about it (and the need to save $$$$) I'm thinking of building one.

My problem is: Do I just build the box AND then find subs to fit?
OR
Do I select which subs I want and then build a box to fit???
I have a friend that use to do competition that's forgotten more than I know--LOL. He said he'd help me wire it all up. I'm still so undecided on what to get. I need to ebay/amazon/sonic to get the prices that I can afford. I'm thinking of doing what mSallo suggested and get some components for my front doors and bridge my old skool V12 Alpine to them. That would also save me some $$ since I have the amp just sitting in the closet.--------DirtySCREW
