Water in my wires

So one of my speakers went bad the other day. Will not produce any sound now no matter what it is connected to. Can't see anything wrong with it though. It was making the amp cut off after a certain level, not very loud really. I go to replace the speakers and when I do water drips out of the sleeve that is around the wiring. The positive and negative wires are in like a plastic sleeve. I am wondering if this is what caused my speaker to go out. And if so, how in the world did the water get in there? There is NO break in the wiring from the amp to the speaker. This has really got me stumped. Also what if I put some clear caulking, like around the edge of a bathtub, to keep water from coming out of the sleeve. Would this work? Maybe this has been covered before but I would like some thoughts on this please. Thanks.
