Screw it...going active

Where you at Msall???

So ive decided, mostly out of laziness, that im going to run my fronts active and leave the rears of deck power.

This is my first time doing an active system, and at this time, im just gonna stick with the speaks that I have (Kappa 5x7 comps) just so that if I blow something out, its nothing to expensive. Amp is the Infinity 475a (keep the hate to yourself Msall )

What tips does anyone have with an active system? Im looking more for amp settings and where to cross over at.

I did a search for active in this sub forum, and found a few things, but figured a new thread would be beneficial. Besides, I know how much everyone loves to show off.

Thanks in advance fellas.

What are you using to control your crossovers? Just the amp settings? Or do you have an actual DSP processor/head unit? Time alignment? Need more info to help you out!

As of now it will just be the amp. My deck is the x910. As of now, no DSP or TA. I should have picked up a 360.2 when I had a chance at it 2 years ago before we dropped Rockford, but i still could pick up a Kicker KQ5, 9, or 30 if need be.

With just the amplifier crossovers, you will need to play around with them to find the best sound. With a 5x7 mid and small tweeter, I would start with crossovers as follows (assuming your amplifier is capable of bandpassing the mids channel):

Sub LP: 80-100Hz
Mid HP: 100Hz
Mid LP: 4k
Tweet HP: 5k

Start there and play around with them until you get the sound desired. Hopefully you have some sort of EQ with a few bands so you can tweak a bit to get a better response. You also need to level match each channel either by ear or by using a DMM or something.

I dont think that amp can do active.

However, your head unit has some limited crossovers that may allow you to make this work:

HPF:
Frequency .......................... 50Hz/63 Hz/80 Hz/100 Hz/
125 Hz
Slope .................................... –12 dB/oct
Subwoofer:
Frequency .......................... 50Hz/63 Hz/80 Hz/100 Hz/
125 Hz
Slope .................................... –18 dB/oct
Gain ...................................... –24/+6 dB
Phase ..................................Normal/Reverse

Based in this, you should be able to use the high pass at one of the settings, then use the crossover on the amp around 3khz (or wherever you decide) to cross over the tweet and mid.

This would essentially give you bandpass ability.

With that said, the first thing I would be looking for is something with time alignment and EQ to go with it. I would not spend the money on anything without time alignment.

I agree with this unless you can get some solid (minimal) path length differences. But in this case you need some serious EQ ability to get that center image. Time alignment is a much easier fix for more extreme PLDs.
