HELP!! Bad bass
HELP!! Bad bass (WITH PICS)
Hey guys I had this system installed today by a reputable shop in OKC. The bass is really tight and I think my problem is that the box is too small and not ported. I've been out of the game for a while and alot has changed over the past 15 years so I mught be out of my mind as far as my prognoses goes. The picture of the box here is upside down as to how it actually sits under the seat. The other 2 pics are of the boxes the stuff came in. I know because the sub is new that it will sound tight untill it breaks in but right now it's super tight. One more thing is that the sub almost lays flat on the floor. Any suggestions? Should I have it ported? Trash the box?

Well what do you listen to?? Sealed is going to be the best sounding for all types of music, and its typically more "punchier", which I love and I listen to mostly rap, with some county and rock thrown in. Thats a nice subwoofer you got too, I am getting two JL 12W3's installed next week. A ported box is going to require a bigger box most likely, so I guess if you wanted, you could do that. It looks like to me that they did a really nice job though. Maybe think about getting another 10 in there if its not loud enough for you. Thats a really nice amp as well, although JL is pretty overpriced as it is, could have got a nice Alpine or Kenwood for cheaper. but thats a top notch setup.
you have a big cab, I have a regular cab, so a single 10 bumps pretty hard in my truck. get another 10 in there with 500 more watts, nd it will be loud. Also, you may want to check the settings on the amp, a lot of times Audio places will tone down the amp A LOT, so its impossible to blow the sub, when if properly adjusted you can probably get wayyyy more out of it, but youd have to look at the settings. When I get my 2 JL12W3's installed its gonna be insane in my regular cab.
1st - the type of enclosure can impact the sound, especially if the box is too small. But the ESS QUE of sealed vs. ported is overplayed, if both are *properly* designed and implemented.
Second - Can you explain what you mean by "tight" sound?
Is the bass not digging very low, sounds like it is playing higher frequencies than it should be?
Have you physically checked the settings on the amp? Could be a sub-sonic filter is turned all the way up, or crossover is set improperly?
Have you checked the head unit (is it aftermarket?) to see if it is set correctly?
Lastly, what is the airspace of the box?
In a 1 cube box that should have an F3 (3db down point on the response curve) of about 45hz, so with cabin gain you should have plenty of volume.
With a smaller box you will run into a much steeper slope for the natural roll off of the sub, causing it to not play low as well. I doubt this is the issue.
