Basically, if I had the space I would do the TW between the choices listed.

With that said, a higher quality 8" sub setup in a properly sized and tuned enclosure will not give up anything to a sealed box *in a vehicle, with music.*

I am throwing on those caveats, as all popular radio music, and in the genre's the OP listed, will not have any content below30-35hz (most peak around 40-45hz - thats why most mass produced stuff is tuned there...). This means a box tuned to ~30 hz or so would provide output at all used frequencies, and probably quite a bit more, thanks to cabin gain and a sealed box roll off.

The low end extension is not really needed for music in a car, so the advantage to a larger cone in a sealed box is generally over rated. much more important is the amount of air moved and the ability to do so at a usable frequency.

The idea of reaching 16hz in car is pretty much a waste. In fact, I would venture a guess that many of us using a SSF have it set above 20hz, with many around 29-30hz for the protection of the woofer.

All of this changes, of course, if there is content at the lower frequencies, but I do not see that as realistic in a car environment.
With a large trunk and plenty of space, what you say is true. My post was specific to the underseat F150 install. I doubt you will find a pair of 8s with large enough excursion AND enough space under the seat (without lift) to tune two of them low enough for similarly strong response to 30Hz as a 13" driver (especially those 8w3). Of course cabin gain could render this logic useless, but I find the F150 seems to have less cabin gain than most vehicles even though the cabin size is sometimes smaller.

For those that offered advice, I am grateful. For everyone else, thanks for the laughs!! As I type, I am in discussions with my daughter as to why she doesn't need a $285 pair of PRPS Jeans when Levi's are good and you can get a pair for $40! Sounds like the JL vs all others argument doesn't it!!!

Talking JL 13TW5 or 2-8w3

Lets keep this insane conversation going, but first, thanks again to all those with informational and helpful posts. Im beginning to steer away from the 13tw5 stealthbox for the lower cost of the 2-8w3's. From what I gather, I will lose some low end, but the 8's would be respectable? Any other brands I should consider for my 8's? I've always owned JL, but am willing to consider other brands. As a reminder, my taste in music runs the spectrum from blue grass to hip-hop and metal.

im going to run one orphan 8 (pretty much the same as the soundsplinter rli-8) in custom ported box under the rear seat in my screw cab. this sub is awesome!! very musical but can get low if you need it to. sundown audio also makes a nice 8 and its nicely priced as well. you cant go wrong with either of these subs, but just make sure you put them in the proper box.
