Help with dual 15" box?
Help with dual 15" box?
I am getting my gf 2- 15" 2ohm kicker L7s for her BDAY and i was wonder if i should go with the ported kicker box or a different box. I cant even find the kicker box so anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks,
Thanks,
get a ported mega probox thats what i have my 15" L7s in, sounds amazing! but let me tell you the box is HUGE, but since it's in the expy i put in the back. I don't know how you're going to fit it inside the cab!
Well, in my experiences.
ported is louder, and more likely to distort as well as causing lots of rattles. It also hits lower, but slower.
Sealed boxes are not as loud as a ported box (if the sub is able to be in either one) but sealed boxed subs tend to hit faster and "tighter" giving you a tight punchy bass.
Now YMMV greatly.
Subs size affects things as well, a 8" sub hits faster and is "tighter" than a 12, much more than a 15 and 18.
a 15 will hit lower than a 8", but its not as punchy.
Bigger subs in a ported box for a person who listens to rap and long low notes, but a smaller sub in a sealed box would be better for a person who likes fast paced music, like say Five finger death punch, or AC/DC and the like.
The 12" is a popular size because its in the middle between 8"s and 15"-18" and is capable of preforming well in any environment and music type provided with the correct box and amp.
personally, unless you are going to try to set records or something, or just want 15"s for bragging rights I would go with 10'S or 12"s
10" would easily done, 12"s could maybe as well, if you got a prefab dual 10" box and cut it to fit a 12" that will have enough air space.

Well there going in the back of an bmw X5 which is an SUV. So box size doesn't really come into play all that much, but she does still need some space for shopping bags!
lol. I think i might do 2- 12" L7s or would you guys recommend JL. Which JL 12 is the best. She likes hard hitting base but nothing rediculous. Did i just contradict myself? haha

1 good 12 ported off 500w would be plenty for someone thats never had subs and be loud enough. That amp would be small enough to hide also. Maybe even jl stealthbox it and put a grill over it. For a grocery getter id put a grill on it anyway.
Well she had a 15" MTX sub in her jeep that hit pretty hard so shes had subs before. Whats the highend JL sub? Is it the 12w7

A singe L7 12 in a ported box should be more than enough, 750 RMS, and 1500 peak. a good solid 800W would do you well.
if you think you should go louder I would go with two L7s and a 1800D. 750+750=1500, so you want a amp a little higher than the subs can handle.
its better to over power than under IMO.
The SUV its self will have its ins and outs, id look around online and see what other people are going with.
Rear facing, up facing down facing. All depends on how the thing handles noise.

You are going to need every bit of rear space in the beemer suv for that type of box. Two 15s require a huge amount of air space.
Hell, one 12 in a properly airspaced ported enclosure takes up a good bit of space.
If you try to stuff them in a smaller enclosure, they will sound like ****.

The L5/L7 might be the sloppiest subwoofer I've ever heard, do yourself a favor and don't waste your money in it.
The 12W7 is a beast and an excellent sounding subwoofer, I really liked the one I heard. But it also has an outrageous pricetag, you are essentially paying for the JL name. You can get as good or better performance for half the price.
I'll make you a recommendation. If you want a very loud, but very clean subwoofer setup, look into the new Exodus Audio subwoofers. Both the 12" ShivaX and 15" Tempest are subwoofers with massive linear throw for high SPL, but also feature XBL dual gap motors for reduced distortion and shorting rings for reduced inductance. Essentially, they will not have increased distortion at high volume like most overhung designs that you see from the mainstream stuff. In a properly sized and tuned ported box, these subwoofers will be brutally loud and surprisingly clean. They will work very well sealed with strong low frequency extension as well if building a custom, properly tuned ported box is beyond your skill level.
I recommend just doing 1 sub because with 2 large woofers you will need a larger amp and electrical upgrades which means more money spent. Plus if you dont plan to upgrade the speakers, having absurd amounts of bass is going to sound like crap anyways...

really? Every one I have listened to sound good to me, and I have been around many sizes and brands.
Just for curiousity's sake, what brands have you had experience with?
It really depends what you are after. Some of us like our speakers to reproduce music accurately, not just be a big fart box. But if you like to thump around to bass tones like the average high schooler looking for attention, then maybe the L7 is a good option.

Kicker (had a L5 12 and heard a L7 12, have a 8" now and dad has two old comp 15's)
Alpine (the local shop had a s-10 with 4 12's)
quantum (personally owned two 12's and a 1800D)
Rockford (been around RF 1'0'S)
MTX (friend had one 15 in a catfish)
audiobahn (had a 12" in a band pass box)
Fusion (Owned a set of 12" and a set of 15's)
I am going to tell you right now, I had to build twoboxes for my L5 before I just bought a kicker factory ported box.
my first sealed box for it sounded like crap, the other was ported, ended up to big.
how I managed to screw up both boxes is beyond me, the first attempt I did on my 97 grand am removing the rear seat and putting the 15's there went well, as did my mustang.
